⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Mating Season is basically a romantic disaster zone disguised as a comedy series. Set around a chaotic group of thirty-somethings navigating modern dating, commitment panic, hookup culture, accidental emotional attachment, and the psychological warfare known as “replying too fast,” the show throws its characters through every relationship catastrophe imaginable. One minute it’s awkward Tinder dates and passive-aggressive brunches, the next somebody’s having a full existential crisis in a supermarket aisle because their ex liked an Instagram story from 14 weeks ago. Modern romance has rarely looked this exhausting—or this accurate. THE PROS The writing absolutely nails the awkwardness of modern relationships. Conversations feel messy, overlapping, petty, and painfully believable instead of sounding like polished sitcom dialogue written by people who’ve never actually dated. The ensemble cast carry the chaos brilliantly too, especially when the show leans into friendship dynamics rather than straightforward romance. There’s a lot of genuinely sharp humour here—less “setup punchline” comedy and more people slowly embarrassing themselves in real time. Underneath all the jokes, the series also quietly captures how emotionally weird modern dating can make people feel. Everybody’s pretending to be emotionally detached while internally spiralling like a washing machine full of insecurity. THE CONS It lands at a 7/10 because the series occasionally mistakes chaos for depth. Some relationship drama gets stretched out longer than needed, and a few side characters drift dangerously close to becoming walking therapy buzzwords instead of actual people. Certain episodes also rely a bit too heavily on characters refusing to communicate properly for the sake of tension. It misses the 8/10 mark because while consistently entertaining, it doesn’t quite deliver the emotional knockout punch needed to elevate it beyond “very bingeable relationship chaos.” THE VERDICT A very strong 7/10. Funny, painfully relatable, and alarmingly accurate about how modern adults can turn simple emotions into full-scale psychological operations. It’s got enough heart underneath the sarcasm to stop it becoming cynical sludge, and enough humour to make even the awkwardest moments weirdly enjoyable. Fair warning though: couples watching together may suddenly start having “interesting conversations” afterwards. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The cast reportedly improvised large chunks of group argument scenes because the creators wanted conversations to feel chaotic and slightly exhausting rather than neatly scripted.• Several dating scenarios in the series were apparently inspired by anonymous real-life horror stories submitted by writers and production staff. Which honestly explains a lot.• The production intentionally avoided making the apartments unrealistically glamorous, wanting the characters’ lives to feel financially and emotionally believable for actual thirty-somethings.• One awkward dinner-party episode became so uncomfortable during filming that even crew members reportedly struggled not to physically cringe behind the monitors.• Internally, parts of the writing team nicknamed the show “Love Island for people with anxiety disorders,” which is brutally accurate.
