⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a 16-year-old high schooler from Jersey City who spends her time writing fan fiction and obsessing over the Avengers—especially Captain Marvel. Her life takes a turn when she finds an old family bangle that grants her the power to create "hard light" structures out of thin air. As she tries to figure out her new abilities, Kamala has to balance her strict but loving Pakistani-American family, her high school drama, and a group of dangerous beings from another dimension who want her bangle back. It’s a bright, creative coming-of-age story about a girl finding her place in a world full of heroes. THE PROS Iman Vellani is a total star and the best thing about the show; she is an honest-to-god fan in real life, and that excitement shines through in every scene. It hits a 7 because the first couple of episodes are incredibly creative, using cool animations and graffiti that comes to life to show what Kamala is thinking. The family dynamic is the heart of the show and feels very sincere—her parents and brother are likable, funny, and feel like real people rather than just background characters. It’s a fresh, colorful change of pace for the MCU that isn't afraid to be funny and lighthearted while still dealing with some heavy family history. THE CONS It stays at a 7 because the villains—a group called the Clandestines—are a bit of a head-scratcher and never really feel like a credible threat. It misses a higher mark because the middle part of the season, where the story moves to Pakistan, feels a bit rushed and can be a slog as the show tries to jam in a lot of complicated backstory. The change to her powers from the comics (light-based instead of stretchy) was an honest point of debate for fans and takes away some of the weird, unique charm her character usually has. The final episode has a lot of action, but it can feel a bit messy and crowded compared to the focused, charming school scenes at the start. THE VERDICT 7/10. A charming, fun, and visually cool debut for a new hero. It’s a good result for younger fans and a fair shout for anyone who wants a superhero show that feels a bit more "human" and colorful. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Iman Vellani was actually a huge Marvel fan before she was cast; she even made her own Ms. Marvel costume for Halloween years before she got the role in the show.• The show features a sincere look at the Partition of India and Pakistan, which is a real historical event that many western viewers hadn't seen discussed in a superhero story before.• To keep the Jersey City setting feeling honest, the production used a lot of local Pakistani and Indian music, and even included a scene where a boy hanging from a mosque tower is eating "pizza with ice cream"—a weird food combo that actually exists. THE VIBE Like a neon-lit bedroom full of posters. It smells of fresh drawing markers, spicy snacks, and the metallic tang of a glowing bangle.
