Overview

One day, electricity just stopped working and the world was suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Now, 15 years later, a young woman's life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously—and unbeknownst to her—had something to do with the blackout. An unlikely group sets out off on a daring journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome to a world where the lights went out and never came back on. *Revolution* (2012–2014) is Eric Kripke’s post-apocalyptic swashbuckler, set 15 years after a mysterious global blackout disabled all electricity—from computers to car engines. Starring Billy Burke as the cynical, sword-wielding Miles Matheson and Tracy Spiridakos as his niece Charlie, the show follows their journey to rescue family members and uncover the truth behind the "blackout." By April 23, 2026, the show is a fascinating time capsule of "High-Concept NBC" television. While it was famously cancelled on a Season 2 cliffhanger in 2014, its story technically concluded via a digital comic book series in 2015. THE PROS Billy Burke is a total win; his portrayal of Miles Matheson—a man who is basically "Han Solo with a katana"—is the 900+ archive's most sincere highlight. Giancarlo Esposito as Major Tom Neville is the business, bringing a chilling, calculating menace that reminds you why he’s the king of TV villains. The show’s biggest win was its "low-tech" aesthetic; seeing iconic landmarks reclaimed by nature and flintlock-and-sword combat in the ruins of the USA was a sincere visual treat. The Season 2 pivot toward "nanotech" and the terrifying, sentient power of the "Nano" was a total head-scratcher that eventually turned into some of the show’s most interesting (and weirdest) sci-fi. THE CONS It is a 7/10 because after a high-budget, cinematic pilot directed by Jon Favreau, the show suffered from a total "Languid Burn" that struggled to maintain its scale on a network budget. It misses the 8/10 mark because the central mystery of "why the power went out" felt a bit wet and meh once it was revealed to be tiny robots, a twist that many 2026 retrospectives still label as a total buzzkill. It is total garbage that NBC cancelled the show just as it was getting weird and interesting, leaving fans with a massive cliffhanger involving the Nano-Army in Bradbury, Idaho. For some, the transition from "swashbuckling adventure" to "hard sci-fi" in Season 2 was a sincere test of patience that split the fanbase. THE VERDICT A 7/10. It is a genuine, ambitious, and ultimately unfinished epic. I was slightly gutted by the 2014 cancellation, but the 42 episodes we have—plus the four-part DC comic wrap-up—are the business for anyone who likes a "world-without-power" mystery. It is total garbage if you want a complete, televised ending, but as a masterpiece of "Kripke-style" world-building, it’s a vault essential. By April 23, 2026, it remains the show that has every viewer looking at their dead smartphone and wondering if they could survive with just a crossbow and a really good coat. THE VIBE Like a steam-powered train moving through a forest-covered highway. It is adventurous, dusty, and deeply curious. It makes you want to take up fencing, hoard batteries just in case, and realize that even without a light switch, the human spirit—and a very sharp sword—can still cut through the dark.
