Overview

A supernatural thriller set in South Carolina, South Of Hell focuses on Maria Abascal (Suvari), a stunning demon-hunter-for-hire whose power stems from within. Like those she hunts, Maria is divided within herself, struggling with her own demon, Abigail, who resides inside of her, feeding on the evil Maria exorcises from others. Maria and Abigail share a soul and a destiny, but as Maria desperately tries to overtake Abigail, she will discover how far Abigail will go to remain a part of her.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARYWelcome to Charleston, South Carolina, where the humidity is high and the demons are higher. Released in 2015, South of Hell stars Mena Suvari as Maria Abascal, a demon hunter for hire who has a bit of a literal "inner conflict." Maria hosts a demon named Abigail inside her who feeds on the evil Maria exorcises from others. It is a Southern Gothic supernatural thriller that tries to balance "demon-of-the-week" scares with a larger family mystery involving her cult-leader father. It is dark, grimy, and leans heavily into the occult vibes of the deep South. THE PROSMena Suvari is a Guaranteed Banger here. She has to play two personalities in one body, and the way she shifts into "Abigail mode" is actually pretty creepy. The show does The Business with its atmosphere; it really captures that sweaty, moss-covered Charleston vibe where you feel like a ghost could be around every corner. It is a Masterpiece of practical makeup effects for some of the demons, especially for a show that was originally on WE tv. When it leans into the weird, ritualistic stuff and the family trauma, it actually finds a unique groove that sets it apart from your standard Constantine or Supernatural clones. THE CONSIt is a 6/10 because the writing can be a total head-scratcher at times. The plot gets incredibly tangled in the middle, and the "demon-feeding" gimmick starts to feel a bit repetitive. It is Garbage that the show was originally released as a marathon-style binge over a single day, which made the pacing feel even more rushed and disjointed. It misses the 9/10 mark because it lacks the budget to really execute its big ideas, and some of the supporting characters feel like they are just there to fill space. By 2026, it is mostly a forgotten relic of the mid-2010s "prestige horror" boom that never quite exploded. THE VERDICTA 6/10. It is The Business if you love Southern Gothic horror and want to see Mena Suvari go full "demon-mode." It is a Masterpiece of a "guilty pleasure" that is perfect for a late-night watch when you want something moody but don't want to think too hard. It is Garbage only if you want high-budget CGI and a perfectly tight script. It is a weird, gritty addition to the 900+ archive that proves not all heroes wear capes—some just carry a very hungry demon in their chest.
