⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The Boroughs takes the sleepy “nothing ever happens here” small-town formula and slowly poisons it from the inside out. Set in a decaying coastal borough where everybody knows each other’s business until suddenly they very much don’t, the series follows a group of locals dragged into a chain of disappearances, buried secrets, and old crimes people thought had stayed buried permanently. Naturally, the town itself becomes part of the horror—every pub conversation feels loaded, every neighbour looks suspicious, and every rainy street corner feels like somebody’s watching from behind a curtain with unresolved issues. THE PROS The atmosphere is absolutely top drawer. This show understands that good mystery dramas aren’t really about plot twists—they’re about dread. The town feels properly lived-in too, not like one of those fake Netflix villages where everybody lives in designer kitchens and owns suspiciously expensive knitwear. The ensemble cast are brilliant across the board, especially the older residents quietly carrying decades of guilt and resentment under layers of small-town politeness. The dialogue has that dry British realism where people rarely say exactly what they mean, which makes every interaction feel tense even during completely normal conversations about tea and weather. When the mystery really starts tightening its grip midway through, it becomes dangerously bingeable. THE CONS It lands at an 8/10 because the pacing occasionally drifts during its slower character-focused stretches. A few episodes spend slightly too long marinating in mood and atmosphere before properly moving the plot forward again. Some viewers might also find the sheer number of interconnected secrets a bit overwhelming at first. It misses the 9/10 mark because despite all the excellent tension-building, the final revelations don’t quite hit with the devastating emotional force the setup promises. THE VERDICT An 8/10. Moody, gripping, and soaked in that uniquely British “something feels horribly wrong but nobody wants to discuss it openly” energy. The Boroughs doesn’t rely on cheap shock twists or endless violence—it hooks you through paranoia, atmosphere, and brilliant character work. One of those shows where even a quiet conversation in a corner shop somehow feels sinister. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The creators reportedly drew inspiration from real declining British coastal towns where economic collapse and generational resentment quietly shaped community life over decades.• Many exterior scenes were filmed during actual overcast weather conditions because the production wanted the town to feel cold, damp, and emotionally drained rather than visually polished.• Several cast members were encouraged to improvise background conversations during pub scenes to make the environment feel genuinely lived-in and slightly claustrophobic.• The production team intentionally avoided using dramatic music in certain tense scenes, relying instead on silence and awkward pauses to build discomfort.
