    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Adapted from the Scandinavian bestseller by Erik Axl Sund, this six-part thriller moves the pained, dark heart of "Nordic Noir" to the streets of Bristol. DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles) and her partner DI Lou Stanley (Dougray Scott) are on the trail of a killer who leaves young men battered and injected with the anesthetic lidocaine. With almost zero evidence and pressure mounting, Jeanette teams up with psychotherapist Dr. Sophia Craven (Katherine Kelly). Together, they dive into a pained world of historic abuse, police corruption, and a killer who is much closer to home than they ever realized. THE PROS This is an amazing series because it manages to keep that bleak, Scandinavian atmosphere while making it feel entirely honest to a UK setting. It hits an 8 because the lead trio of Eve Myles, Katherine Kelly, and Dougray Scott is a total highlight; their performances bring a sincere, heavy-hitting depth to a very dark story. The cinematography is smart and moody, utilizing the grey, overcast Bristol landscape to create a sense of claustrophobia that never lets up. It’s a great series for those who want a pained, psychological thriller that focuses as much on the damaged minds of the investigators as it does on the mystery itself. The reveal of the "Crow Girl" is a fair shout for one of the most unnerving twists of 2025. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the sheer level of grimness and child abuse themes can feel like a bit of a slog for more sensitive viewers. It misses a higher mark because some of the "multiple personality" subplots are an honest head-scratcher and can feel a pained bit dated compared to the rest of the gritty, modern storytelling. The pacing in the middle episodes can drag slightly as the show balances several different timelines and corrupt institutions, making it feel like a bit of a slog to keep every thread straight. While the atmosphere is amazing, some of the dialogue about "the voices of the dead" is a fair shout for a bit clunky and takes you out of the honest, grounded vibe. THE VERDICT 8/10. A masterfully bleak, smart, and pained crime drama. It’s an amazing adaptation that proves British thrillers can be just as dark and gripping as the best of Nordic noir. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To keep the "Bristol Metropolitan Police" setting feeling honest, the production converted the former Bank of England building on Wine Street into a massive, functioning police station set for the duration of filming. • Eve Myles reportedly spent time with real-life DCI consultants to ensure her portrayal of a "domestically harassed" but top-tier detective felt sincere and wasn't just another TV cop trope. • The series was so successful upon its January 2025 release on Paramount+ that a second series was confirmed just weeks later, aimed at exploring the pained fallout of the first season's final revelations. THE VIBE Like a cold fog rolling off the Bristol Channel. It smells of damp concrete, old files, and the metallic tang of a sterile hospital room.
