Overview

Set against the sun-soaked but deeply sleazy backdrop of Brighton, the story follows Bunny Munro, a pathologically sex-obsessed, slick-talking door-to-door beauty product salesman. When his depressed wife Libby tragically commits suicide, Bunny is left completely unmoored. Refusing to let social services step in, he grabs his sensitive, nine-year-old son, Bunny Junior, throws him into the passenger seat of his yellow convertible, and embarks on a completely unhinged sales road trip along the south coast that quickly spirals into a dark, hallucination-fueled nightmare. THE PROS Matt Smith turns in an absolute career-best performance as Bunny, channeling an incredible mix of sleazy, magnetic charm and pathetic, hollow desperation that makes him impossible to look away from. Newcomer Rafael Mathé is a complete revelation as Bunny Junior, anchoring the show's emotional heart with a quiet, heartbreaking innocence as he watches his dad slowly unravel. Director Isabella Eklöf does a brilliant job, shooting the coastal holiday towns with a bright, sunny energy that contrasts beautifully with the grim, pitch-black narrative, while the haunting musical score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis adds a gorgeous, dream-like quality. THE CONS The relentlessly toxic, narcissistic behavior of Bunny means you are spending six episodes with a genuinely unlikable protagonist, which can make for a deeply uncomfortable, difficult watch at times. The bizarre tonal shifts between laugh-out-loud dark comedy, intense grief, and surreal psychological thriller elements might feel a bit jarring for viewers expecting a standard, straightforward crime drama. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a bold, uncompromising, and deeply moving study of toxic masculinity and generational trauma that refuses to play it safe. It comfortably hits an 8 because the central father-son chemistry is mesmerizing, the style is oozing with Nick Cave's poetic DNA, and Matt Smith plays the sleazy lothario with absolute perfection.
