⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Mike Flanagan takes the gothic nightmares of Edgar Allan Poe and drags them kicking and screaming into the modern era. The Usher siblings are the heirs to a pharmaceutical empire built on greed, blood, and a mountain of corpses. But the debt is finally due. One by one, the heirs begin to die in increasingly creative and gruesome ways at the hands of a mysterious woman from their parents' past. It’s a deliciously dark, blood-soaked satire of the ultra-wealthy that plays like Succession meets Final Destination. THE PROS This is a 9/10 because it’s a masterclass in tension and poetic justice. Flanagan manages to weave dozens of Poe’s stories into one cohesive narrative that feels both classic and incredibly relevant. Carla Gugino is a revelation as Verna, shifting between terrifying and seductive with effortless grace. The show is visually stunning, with each episode dedicated to a different sibling’s downfall, allowing for a variety of horror styles—from psychological dread to full-blown gore. It hits Epic status because it’s not just a horror show; it’s a biting critique of corporate soullessness that manages to be both heartbreaking and hilarious. THE CONS It misses the 10/10 mark because the dialogue can occasionally feel a bit too "written." While the monologues are beautiful, people don't always talk in perfect stanzas, which can pull you out of the grit of the moment. It settles at a 9 because the sheer number of characters means a few of the middle siblings don't get quite as much development before their inevitable expiration, making their deaths feel a bit more like a checkbox than a tragedy. If you want to watch the rich get exactly what’s coming to them in the most stylish way possible, this is a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Last-Minute Legend: Bruce Greenwood wasn't the original Roderick Usher. Frank Langella was halfway through filming when he was let go for misconduct, and Greenwood stepped in to reshoot all of his scenes, delivering a performance so seamless you’d never know he was a late arrival.• Poe-try in Motion: Every single episode title is a reference to a Poe story, and if you listen closely, almost every character’s name—from the siblings to the investigators—is pulled directly from Poe's bibliography.• Hidden Details: Much like Flanagan's other series, there are hidden ghosts and "Easter eggs" tucked away in the shadows of the Usher mansion. Keep an eye on the background of the 1979 flashbacks to spot clues about Verna’s true nature. THE VIBE Like a funeral in a penthouse. It smells like expensive lilies, old cognac, and decay. It’s cold, cynical, and beautifully tragic. It makes you want to check your bank balance, avoid mysterious strangers, and realize that you can’t take your empire with you when the raven comes knocking.
