Overview

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY The X-Men are gone, the Brotherhood has vanished, and being born with a "gift" is now a one-way ticket to a government detention centre. The Gifted follows the Strucker family, whose lives are flipped upside down when they discover their two teenagers are mutants. Suddenly, the dad—who used to prosecute mutants for a living—has to take his family on the run and join a ragtag underground resistance. It’s a grounded, gritty take on the X-Men mythos that focuses on survival and family secrets rather than flashy costumes and saving the world. THE PROS This is a solid 7/10 because it actually makes the "mutant metaphor" feel real. Instead of flying jets, these mutants are hiding in abandoned warehouses and scrounging for medicine. Emma Dumont is fantastic as Polaris; she’s magnetic (literally) and captures that unstable, rebellious energy of being Magneto’s daughter perfectly. The chemistry between the underground members feels genuine, especially the bond between Polaris and Eclipse. The show is at its best when it leans into the high-stakes tension of being hunted by "Sentinel Services," making the world feel dangerous and claustrophobic. THE CONS It misses an 8/10 because it can get bogged down in a lot of repetitive "hide and seek" drama. There are only so many times you can see them narrowly escape a raid before it starts to feel a bit like a loop. Some of the human characters, particularly the parents, can feel a bit flat compared to the much more interesting mutants they’re protecting. It settles at a 7 because the budget for the special effects can be a bit hit-and-miss—one minute the powers look great, and the next they look like something out of a mid-2000s TV movie. The fact that it was cancelled after two seasons also means it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger that we'll never see resolved. THE VERDICT A decent 7/10. It’s a strong, character-driven thriller that does a great job of showing what life would actually be like for mutants in a world that hates them. It isn't an 8 because of the shaky pacing and some underwhelming villains, but it’s still one of the better X-Men projects in the archive. If you want a superhero show that feels more like an "underground railroad" story with some cool powers thrown in, this is a very solid watch. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Family Tree: In the show, the Strucker kids are revealed to be the grandchildren of Andreas and Andrea von Strucker, better known in the comics as the "Fenris" twins. The show cleverly links their combined power to this dark comic book legacy.• Alternate Timeline: The showrunners confirmed that the series takes place in an alternate timeline where the X-Men disappeared after a mysterious event called "7/15." This allowed them to tell their own story without having to worry about what Wolverine or Professor X were doing.• Rings of Power: To help with the visual effects for Eclipse (who can manipulate light), actor Sean Teale often had to wear special LED rings on his fingers. This gave off a real-world glow on his face and the actors around him, making the post-production CGI look much more natural. THE VIBE Like a cold night in a rainy alleyway, the sound of sirens in the distance, and the feeling of a secret that’s about to explode. It’s tense, desperate, and surprisingly human. It makes you want to pack a "go-bag," check your DNA, and realize that family is the only thing worth fighting for when the world turns against you.
