    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY If you ever wondered what would happen if a manic-depressive Old Testament prophet decided to start a revolution with a cross-dressing teenager and a drunk vampire, you’d get *The Good Lord Bird* (2020). Based on James McBride's brilliant novel, this seven-episode limited series follows Henry "Onion" Shackleford (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a young enslaved boy who is "liberated" by the radical abolitionist John Brown (Ethan Hawke). Brown, convinced Onion is a girl, takes him on a chaotic, bloody, and hilariously absurd journey toward the 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry. By April 2026, it is officially the "hidden masterpiece" of the 900+ archive, a show that handles America's original sin with a mix of slapstick comedy and gut-punching sincerity. THE PROS Ethan Hawke is a total win; his performance as John Brown is a sincere, electric whirlwind of spittle, prayer, and righteous fury. He plays Brown not just as a "crazy old man," but as a man so sane he’s actually willing to die for what is right, which is its own kind of madness. The show’s biggest win is its tone—it manages to be riotously funny one moment and devastatingly tragic the next, capturing the "bloody farce" of history in a way that feels incredibly modern. Joshua Caleb Johnson is the business, providing the perfect "straight man" (well, girl) to Brown's insanity, and the guest spots by Daveed Diggs (as a preening Frederick Douglass) and Zainab Jah (as Harriet Tubman) are genuine masterstrokes. THE CONS It is a 9/10 because, as history dictates, the ending is a total heartbreaker. It misses the 10/10 mark because some of the mid-journey pacing can feel like a bit of a Languid Burn if you aren't a fan of 19th-century theological debates and long prayers while the food gets cold. It is total garbage that this show didn't become a massive "lockdown hit" in late 2020, likely because it was overshadowed by the news cycle. For some, the satirical take on legendary figures like Douglass can be a bit of a head-scratcher if you prefer your history books to be dry and humorless. THE VERDICT A 9/10. It is a genuine, witty, and profoundly moving portrait of one of history’s most polarizing figures. I was slightly gutted to see it pop up on "Most Overlooked Series" lists again this April, but it has found a permanent home in the vault as a definitive piece of historical fiction. It is total garbage if you want a traditional, safe biography, but as a psychedelic, folk-inspired look at the spark that ignited the Civil War, it’s essential.
