Overview

When 14 year old genius Luke Ellis is kidnapped, he awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did, and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.

Released in July 2025 on MGM+, The Institute is a faithful eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s 2019 novel. The story follows 12-year-old genius Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman), who is kidnapped after his parents are murdered and taken to a clandestine facility filled with other kids who possess telepathic or telekinetic "talents." While the kids are being experimented on by the ice-cold Mrs. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker), a disgraced ex-cop named Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) starts a new life as a night watchman in a nearby town, unaware that his path is about to collide with a telekinetic prison break.​ THE PROSMary-Louise Parker is a Guaranteed Banger as the villain. She plays Mrs. Sigsby with a "polite monster" vibe that is genuinely unsettling—she is not screaming, she is just making sure your torture session is on schedule. The young Joe Freeman (son of Martin Freeman) is a Masterpiece of a lead, bringing a level of intelligence and vulnerability to Luke that makes you root for him from the first frame. The show does The Business by capturing that classic Stephen King "kids on a mission" spirit, making the bond between the captive children feel authentic and moving. When the show focuses on the "Front Half" of the Institute and the creeping dread of the experiments, it is a Masterpiece of psychological horror that feels like a more grounded, nastier cousin to Stranger Things.​ THE CONSIt is a 7/10 because it suffers from a major Languid Burn in the middle. At eight hours, the plot feels stretched, and you might find yourself checking the clock during Tim’s "small-town life" segments before they finally link up with the main action. It is a head-scratcher why some of the CGI for the psychic powers looks a bit "budget" compared to the high-tier acting on display. It misses the 9/10 mark because the ending, while explosive, feels a bit rushed and leaves several major lore questions hanging for a potential Season 2. For some, the imagery of child experimentation might be total Garbage to sit through, as the show does not hold back on the bleakness of King’s original vision.​ THE VERDICTA 7/10. It is The Business for King purists who wanted a literal page-to-screen translation. It is a Masterpiece of casting that proves Joe Freeman is a star in the making and reminds us that Ben Barnes is the king of playing "haunted men with a secret."
