Overview

Anna Macy left Kettering when she was just 14, shortly after her best friend, Gillian Baxter mysteriously disappeared. The two girls had been playing in the forbidden forests outside Kettering when they saw strange lights in the sky. Eight hours later, Anna was found alone, terrified and covered in blood. 15 years on, Anna returns to find the town struggling to survive. The forests have been marked for logging and the community is being torn apart by passionate but violent clashes between environmentalists and the local loggers.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Welcome to the edge of the world, where the trees have ears and the sky has lights that shouldn't be there. *The Kettering Incident* (2016) is a haunting Australian gothic thriller that stars Elizabeth Debicki as Anna Macy, a doctor who returns to her childhood home in Tasmania 15 years after her best friend vanished in the woods. When another girl goes missing under identical circumstances, Anna finds herself at the center of a town-wide conspiracy involving blackouts, strange glowing moss, and "unmothily" behavior from local insects. By April 2026, it is officially the "Twin Peaks of the Southern Hemisphere," a one-season masterpiece that redefined Australian noir. THE PROS Elizabeth Debicki is a total win; she manages to look both like a fragile porcelain doll and a woman who could survive a zombie apocalypse, capturing Anna’s descent into madness with sincere, bug-eyed intensity. The show’s biggest win is its atmosphere—Tasmania has never looked more beautiful or more terrifyingly claustrophobic. The cinematography captures a raw, blue-tinged light that makes the forest feel like a living, breathing antagonist. The chemistry between Anna and the local cop Fergus (Henry Nixon) is the business, providing a grounded emotional anchor in a story that gets progressively more "out there" with every episode. It misses the 9/10 mark because some of the town politics (the logging vs. environmentalist subplots) can feel like a bit of a Languid Burn that distracts from the delicious sci-fi mystery at the core. It is total garbage that Foxtel never greenlit Season 2, despite the show winning major awards and co-creator Victoria Madden having a full story outline ready to go. For many, the finale’s "multiple Annas" reveal was a sincere "WTF" moment that needed at least another six episodes to explain. THE VERDICT An 8/10. It is a genuine, eerie, and intellectually demanding puzzle box. I was slightly gutted when the 2025 "anniversary revival" rumors turned out to be just a 4K Blu-ray re-release, but the show remains a pillar of the 900+ archive for its sheer ambition. It is total garbage if you want a neat procedural where the killer is caught and everyone goes for a beer, but as a descent into the uncanny, it’s essential.
