    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10​ THE SUMMARY​Damon Lindelof didn’t just adapt the unadaptable; he performed a high-wire act over a volcano. Set 34 years after the events of the legendary 1985 graphic novel, this 2019 limited series ignores the Zack Snyder movie and treats the comic as holy text. In a 2019 where Robert Redford has been President for decades and the internet doesn't exist, we follow Angela Abar (Regina King), a Tulsa detective who suits up as "Sister Night" to fight a white supremacist group called the Seventh Kavalry. It is a dense, non-linear mystery that untangles the secret history of the world's first masked heroes while tackling the heavy legacy of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.​ THE PROS​Regina King is a total force—she anchors the show with a performance that is both physically brutal and deeply emotional. The show’s biggest win is how it uses the superhero genre to deconstruct real-world history and systemic trauma; it is smart, daring, and incredibly relevant. The "Hooded Justice" flashback episode is a flat-out masterpiece of television, rewriting comic book lore in a way that feels like it was meant to be there all along. Jean Smart as a cynical, older Laurie Blake is a stroke of genius, bringing a dry wit that cuts through the show's darker moments. Plus, the Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score is a moody, industrial pulse that makes the alternate reality feel dangerous and alive.​ THE CONS​It is a 9/10 because the barrier to entry is high. If you haven't read the original comic (or at least read a very detailed summary), you will spend the first three episodes in a total state of "what on earth is happening?" It misses the 10/10 mark because the final episode feels a bit more "standard superhero" compared to the high-concept brilliance of the previous eight, wrapping up a few massive plot points a little too neatly. It is a head-scratcher why some characters from the lore were brought back just to be sidelined, but for the most part, the payoff is huge.​ THE VERDICT​A 9/10. It is a rare example of a sequel that actually justifies its own existence. Lindelof took a huge risk by touching Alan Moore's legacy, but he managed to create something that feels like a spiritual brother to the original while carving out its own identity. It is a sincere, heavy, and brilliantly acted limited series that doesn't overstay its welcome. It is total garbage if you want a mindless action flick, but it is a crown jewel of the 900+ archive for anyone who wants their sci-fi with a massive side of social commentary. By April 2026, it remains the gold standard for how to "reboot" a classic.​ INSOMNIAC TRIVIA​* The Egg Motif: Throughout the series, eggs are used as a visual metaphor for creation and legacy. In the very first episode, Angela cracks eggs into a bowl in the shape of the iconic Watchmen smiley face, a subtle nod to the Comedian's blood-stained pin.​* Native Son: Tim Blake Nelson, who plays the reflective-masked detective Looking Glass, is an actual Tulsa native. He was so impressed by the script’s handling of his hometown’s history that he signed on almost immediately.​* Secret Manhattan: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was told from his very first audition that his character, Cal, was actually Dr. Manhattan in disguise, but he had to keep it a secret from the rest of the cast for months during filming.​* Lube Man: The mysterious, silver-suited character known as "Lube Man" who slides into a sewer drain became a massive meme. The show’s companion website, Peteypedia, later confirmed he was actually Agent Dale Petey.​* The 2026 Connection: This year, the show has seen a massive "legacy" rewatch after Damon Lindelof hinted in a March 2026 interview that he might finally be open to an anthology-style "Season 2" set in a different decade.​ THE VIBE​Like walking through a museum of secrets while a clock ticks loudly in your ear. It is clinical, haunting, and incredibly vivid. It makes you want to read every bit of "bonus material" you can find just to understand the world a little bit better.
