Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Set in the mid-90s, the seventh installment of the franchise takes us from Brooklyn to Peru, introducing the Maximals—beast-themed robots from the future—to the ongoing war on Earth. Anthony Ramos plays Noah, a tech-savvy ex-soldier who accidentally teams up with Mirage (voiced with a total winner energy by Pete Davidson). Together with researcher Elena (Dominique Fishback), they must help Optimus Prime and the Autobots stop the planet-eating Unicron and his herald, Scourge. It’s a high-quality global adventure that feels more sincere and grounded than the later Bay-era films, leaning into a fun, nostalgic hip-hop vibe. THE PROS This earns a 7/10 because it’s an absolute winner for fans of the "Beast Wars" era. The character work is a high-quality shout; Mirage is a total banger, bringing a sincere and legendary personality that serves as the heart of the movie. It hits the 7 mark because the action sequences are much cleaner and more honest than previous entries, allowing you to actually see the high-quality robot choreography without the usual "scrap metal" blur. The 90s setting is legendary, complete with a high-quality soundtrack that fits the energy perfectly. Optimus Primal and the Maximals are absolute quality, and their legendary "Maximize" moment is a total win for long-time fans who have been waiting decades to see them on the big screen. THE CONS It lands a 7/10 because the plot is a bit of a standard slow-roller in the middle, following a very predictable "find the hidden artifact" quest. While the robots are high-quality, some of the human subplots feel a touch quality-deficient and distract from the legendary bot-on-bot action. Having both legendary voices together was a high-quality win for the fans.• Peruvian Heights: To capture a sincere and legendary look, the crew filmed on location in Machu Picchu and Tarapoto, Peru. They had to be incredibly careful with the high-quality equipment to ensure no honest damage was done to the ancient, legendary heritage site.• Pete's Improv: Many of Mirage's high-quality lines were improvised by Pete Davidson. The director encouraged his sincere, off-the-cuff humor to ensure the character felt like a total winner and stood out from the more serious, legendary Autobots.
