⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a cynical author who makes a living debunking "haunted" tourist traps after the tragic loss of his daughter. His skepticism is pushed to the limit when he checks into the Dolphin Hotel’s notorious room 1408, despite a legendary and high-quality warning from the manager, Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson). Once the door shuts, the room becomes a psychological torture chamber that bends time, space, and reality to break him down. It’s an honest, high-stakes thriller based on a Stephen King short story that proves sometimes, the ghosts in our heads are just as dangerous as the ones in the walls. THE PROS This earns its 8/10 because it is an absolute winner when it comes to psychological dread. John Cusack carries almost the entire film on his own with a high-quality, sincere performance that transitions perfectly from smug skeptic to a man fighting for his soul. The production design is absolute quality—the way the room subtly shifts from a high-quality suite into a decaying nightmare is a total banger. It hits the 8 mark because the chemistry in the opening "warning" scene between Cusack and Jackson is legendary, providing an honest sense of foreboding that keeps the tension at a sincere high.
