⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) are a couple who have just moved into a new home with their three children. When their son Dalton falls into a mysterious, unexplainable coma after exploring the attic, the family begins to experience terrifying supernatural phenomena. It turns out the house isn't haunted—the boy is. Dalton has the ability to astral project, and his spirit has drifted too far into "The Further," a dark realm filled with tortured souls desperate to use his body as a vessel to return to the living world. THE PROS This is a masterclass in building dread without relying on a massive budget. James Wan ditches the gore of his earlier work for classic, old-school scares that play on your primal fear of what's lurking in the corner of your eye. It hits an 8 because the sound design is genuinely unsettling—that screeching violin score will get under your skin instantly. The introduction of Lin Shaye as the medium, Elise, brings a sincere, grounded authority to the paranormal investigation. It’s an honest, refreshing take on the "haunted house" genre that introduces a unique mythology and one of the most effective jump scares in modern cinema (looking at you, red-faced demon). THE CONS The third act, where we actually enter "The Further," can feel a bit theatrical and less frightening once the mystery of the unknown is removed. It stays at an 8 because some of the ghosts in the dark realm look a bit like actors in costumes, which can pull you out of the gritty tension established in the first half. It misses a higher mark because the ending, while a classic twist, feels a bit like it was designed specifically to set up a franchise rather than providing a fully closed narrative loop for the family. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, smart, and genuinely terrifying supernatural thriller. It’s an honest win for original horror that proves you don't need blood and guts to keep people awake at night. A fair shout if you fancy a proper scare that lingers long after the lights go out. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The "Lipstick-Face Demon" was actually played by the film's composer, Joseph Bishara, who also handled the jarring, dissonant score that gives the movie its specific sense of panic. • To keep the production costs low, the film was shot in just three weeks, which forced the crew to use practical effects and creative lighting rather than expensive digital work. • The name of the demon’s realm, "The Further," was a late addition; during filming, the script originally referred to it simply as "The Ether."
