Overview

Based on the true story of would-be Brooklyn bank robbers John Wojtowicz and Salvatore Naturile. Sonny and Sal attempt a bank heist which quickly turns sour and escalates into a hostage situation and stand-off with the police. As Sonny's motives for the robbery are slowly revealed and things become more complicated, the heist turns into a media circus.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY On a sweltering Brooklyn afternoon, Sonny (Al Pacino) and his dim-witted partner Sal (John Cazale) attempt to rob a local bank to fund a life-altering surgery for Sonny’s partner. What should have been a quick in-and-out job turns into a media circus and a high-stakes hostage standoff when the police surround the building. As the heat rises and the crowd outside begins to side with the "outlaw," Sonny becomes an accidental folk hero, navigating a frantic negotiation with the FBI while his personal life is picked apart on live television. THE PROS This is Al Pacino at the absolute peak of his powers. He brings a frantic, vulnerable, and honest energy to Sonny that makes you root for a man who is clearly out of his depth. It hits a 9 because it’s a masterclass in tension and tonal shifting—one minute it’s a chaotic comedy of errors, the next it’s a gritty, heart-breaking drama. The chemistry between Pacino and John Cazale is legendary; Cazale’s quiet, tragic performance as Sal is the perfect anchor to Pacino’s loud desperation. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • The film is based on the real-life robbery committed by John Wojtowicz in 1972; Wojtowicz actually watched the movie while in prison and praised Pacino’s performance, though he took issue with some of the factual liberties.• There is virtually no music in the film except for the song "Free Money" at the very beginning; director Sidney Lumet wanted the sounds of the street and the bank to provide the only "score" to keep the atmosphere authentic.• Al Pacino was so exhausted during filming that he actually collapsed at one point, which Sidney Lumet used to his advantage by capturing Sonny’s physical and mental breakdown as the standoff dragged on.
