⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Pierce Brosnan’s third outing finds 007 acting as a high-stakes bodyguard for Elektra King, the daughter of an oil tycoon who was assassinated inside MI6 headquarters. The threat comes in the form of Renard, a terrorist with a bullet lodged in his brain that renders him incapable of feeling pain. It’s a film that attempts to blend a deeply personal, tragic romance with a massive nuclear plot involving a submarine in the Bosphorus. It’s a stylish, late-90s spy thriller that pushes Bond into more morally grey territory than usual. THE PROS The opening boat chase on the River Thames is a win and remains one of the best pre-credit sequences in the entire franchise—it’s fast, destructive, and looks incredible. Sophie Marceau as Elektra King is a sincere highlight; she brings a complex, manipulative energy to the role that makes her one of the most interesting "Bond girls" ever written. Robert Carlyle is a total belter as the stone-cold Renard, using his lack of physical sensation to create some genuinely creepy moments. It’s a celebratory explosion of classic gadgets and stunning locations that feels like the ultimate "comfort food" for Bond fans. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the casting of Denise Richards as a nuclear physicist is a bit of a head-scratcher and doesn't quite land with the sincerity the film needs. The plot can feel a bit wet in the middle act, with a few too many scenes of people looking at digital maps and talking about oil pipelines. It misses the 8/10 status because it struggles to balance its darker, more emotional themes with the campier elements of the era. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Longest Intro: The pre-credits sequence lasts for about 14 minutes, making it the longest opening in Bond history at the time; it was originally much shorter, but the producers loved the Thames chase so much they expanded it.• Boat Stunts: During the Thames chase, the Q-Boat performed a record-breaking 360-degree barrel roll; it took 15 takes to get it right, and the boat had to be specifically weighted to ensure it didn't just sink after the rotation.• Millennium Dome: The film features the then-new Millennium Dome in London; the production was actually one of the first to be allowed to film at the site, which added a futuristic, "turn of the century" vibe to the opening. THE VIBE Like a leather-bound diary hidden inside a high-tech vault. It smells like crude oil, expensive perfume, and cold sea air. It makes you want to buy a ski jacket with a built-in avalanche bubble, visit a casino in the mountains, and never trust a billionaire with a vendetta.
