⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 5/10 THE SUMMARY A bizarre, surreal horror thriller that tries to mix Silent Hill vibes with a dark fairytale but ends up getting completely lost in its own corridors. The story follows Amy, a brilliant surgeon who is completely consumed by grief over her comatose son. Desperate for answers, she wanders into an abandoned, decaying school that acts as a creepy purgatory, trapped in a twisted underworld ruled by a feral pack of lost children where she has to face her deepest fears to get him back. THE PROS The set design inside the decaying school is absolutely spectacular, giving you loads of grimy, rust-covered visual eye candy that creates a properly heavy atmosphere. Nicholas Hope turns in a wonderfully creepy, unsettling performance as the bizarre authority figure watching over the kids, bringing a touch of genuine menace to the madness. A few of the practical makeup effects on the monstrous entities look brilliant and provide some solid, skin-crawling imagery. THE CONS The script is a proper mess, constantly changing its own supernatural rules and throwing random metaphors at the wall to see what sticks. It tries way too hard to be deeply psychological, but the heavy-handed symbolism about maternal guilt quickly becomes repetitive and blocks any real tension. The pacing is incredibly clunky, making a short ninety-minute movie feel like a massive, exhausting slog that struggles to keep you awake. THE VERDICT A flat 5/10. It has plenty of stylish, gritty visuals to look at, but there is almost zero substance holding the entire thing together. It scrapes a 5 purely because the abandoned school looks fantastic and the acting is decent enough, but the chaotic story and lack of actual scares make it completely forgettable. One to skip unless you are completely desperate for a bit of stylized background noise. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Historic Walls: The movie was filmed on location at the notorious, abandoned Gladesville Mental Hospital in Sydney, a historic site known for its genuinely dark and creepy atmosphere.• Visual Inversions: To make the supernatural realm feel completely unnatural, the director had several background actors walk backward during filming and then reversed the footage in editing.• Narrative Origin: The project originally started out as a short film concept before the producers decided to stretch the psychological mystery out into a full-length feature. THE VIBE Like walking through a cold, damp basement while a strobe light flashes and children's laughter echoes from nowhere. It smells like wet chalk, old concrete, and stale institutional air. Messy, confusing, and slightly tedious.
