⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Edward (Sebastian Stan) is a struggling actor in New York living with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes heavy facial disfigurement. He’s shy, avoids eye contact, and feels like a ghost in his own life. When he undergoes a radical, experimental medical treatment, his face literally falls away to reveal a "perfect" movie-star look. He restarts his life as a slick real estate agent named Guy, but his new-found confidence is shattered when he meets Oswald (Adam Pearson)—a man with the same condition Edward used to have, but who is charismatic, popular, and everything Edward never was. It’s a pitch-black, surreal comedy about how fixing your face doesn't necessarily fix your head. THE PROS This is a massive win because it flips the "tragic disability" trope on its head. Adam Pearson is the absolute standout; he’s naturally funny and charming, making it easy to see why Edward is so threatened by him. Sebastian Stan is also brilliant, playing both the awkward original Edward and the increasingly desperate "Guy" with real grit. It hits an 8 because it’s a smart, uncomfortable satire that asks whether we’re actually better off conforming to what society calls "normal." The prosthetic work in the first half is incredible, looking totally real and avoiding any "Hollywood mask" vibes. THE CONS The film is a bit of a slow-burner, and the second half gets increasingly weird, which might be a bit of a head-scratcher for people wanting a straightforward drama. It stays at an 8 because the pacing drags slightly as Edward’s obsession with Oswald spirals out of control. It misses a perfect score because some of the supporting characters feel a bit like cartoons compared to the grounded, painful reality of the leads. The ending is also quite cynical—it’s honest and fits the theme, but it’s definitely not a "feel-good" resolution. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, funny, and deeply uncomfortable look at identity and self-loathing. It’s a total banger for anyone who likes their comedies dark and their messages complex. THE VIBE Like looking into a funhouse mirror that shows you the truth. It smells of old greasepaint, clinical antiseptic, and the metallic tang of a cold New York subway.
