Overview

After escaping with Newt and Hicks from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on Fiorina 161, a prison planet and host to a correctional facility. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, a more unwelcome visitor does. The prison does not allow weapons of any kind, and with aid being a long time away, the prisoners must simply survive in any way they can.

    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY David Fincher’s directorial debut is the black sheep of the franchise, famously stripping away the high-octane triumph of the previous film within the first five minutes. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) crash-lands on Fiorina 161, a bleak "blast furnace" prison colony populated by a religious cult of double-Y chromosome convicts. Shaved-headed and grieving, she soon realizes she didn’t arrive alone. With no weapons and a group of nihilistic prisoners, she has to face off against a quadrupedal Xenomorph in a grim, industrial game of hide-and-seek. It’s a nihilistic, moody, and visually striking end to the original trilogy that trades pulse rifles for pure despair. THE PROS Sigourney Weaver is a total winner here; her performance is sincere, raw, and arguably her most emotionally demanding turn as Ripley. The film earns a 6/10 because the production design is high-quality, creating a rust-covered, dripping world that feels properly lived-in and decaying. The supporting cast is a legendary shout, with Charles Dance and Holt McCallany bringing some much-needed grit and class to the prison corridors. It’s a 10/10 for atmosphere, as Fincher’s eye for shadows and industrial grime makes the setting feel like its own character. The score by Elliot Goldenthal is a total banger, swapping the militaristic drums of the sequel for a haunting, operatic dread that perfectly matches the film’s bleak tone. THE CONS It lands a 6/10 because the decision to kill off beloved characters from the previous film off-screen is a massive clanger that still leaves a sour taste for many fans. The middle part is quite sluggish, with a lot of bald men running through identical-looking tunnels, making the geography of the chase scenes a total head-scratcher. It misses a higher mark because the "Rod-Puppet" CGI used for the alien in certain wide shots is quality-deficient and hasn't aged well, looking jittery and flat compared to the practical suits. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Shaved Heads: Sigourney Weaver was paid a $4 million bonus to shave her head for the role, and she reportedly loved the look so much she wanted to keep it for future projects. • Set Problems: The script was still being written as sets were being built, leading to a legendary mess where a massive wooden "monastery" set was constructed and then completely scrapped when the setting changed to a prison. • The "Dog-Alien": To make the Xenomorph move differently than a man in a suit, the team originally tried to put a costume on a Whippet dog, but it looked too comical, so they moved to a mixture of animatronics and rod-puppetry.
