⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Vito Genovese and Frank Costello are two rival Italian-American crime bosses running the streets of mid-century New York. In a move that defines the era, Robert De Niro plays both men, showing the internal and external war for control over the mob. When Genovese attempts to assassinate Costello, the failure sparks a messy, high-stakes power struggle that forces both men to decide how they want to be remembered. It’s a gritty, old-school gangster flick that focuses on the aging ego of men who have spent their lives in the shadows. THE PROS De Niro is the main draw here, and he manages to make the two leads feel like completely different people through posture and voice rather than just heavy makeup. It’s a bit of a throwback to the classic mob dramas of the 90s, with a focus on dialogue and tension rather than constant gunfights. It hits a 7 because the period detail is spot on—the cars, the suits, and the smoke-filled clubs feel lived-in and honest. THE VIBE Like a glass of neat whiskey in a dark leather booth. It smells of expensive cigars, rain-slicked pavement, and the metallic tang of a cold snub-nosed revolver.
