⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Years after the tragic death of their young daughter, a dollmaker and his wife open their home to a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage. The isolated farmhouse seems like a sanctuary until one of the girls, Janice, finds a hidden room and a certain porcelain doll locked in a closet. What starts as a creepy discovery quickly turns into a battle for their souls as a demonic entity uses the doll as a conduit to hunt the children. It’s a prequel that actually manages to outclass the original, filling in the blanks of the doll's dark history with a lot more bite. THE PROS David F. Sandberg brings his "Lights Out" expertise here, using silence and shadows to create some genuinely gripping tension that feels honest and earned. The young leads, Lulu Wilson and Talitha Bateman, are fantastic; their friendship feels sincere, which makes the stakes feel much higher when they're being hunted. It’s an 8/10 because the scares are inventive and atmospheric—the dumbwaiter scene and the scarecrow in the barn are absolute standouts. The production design captures that dusty, middle-of-nowhere 1950s aesthetic perfectly, adding to the feeling of total isolation. It also does a brilliant job of linking directly to the first Annabelle movie, making the whole trilogy feel more cohesive. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part can feel a bit sluggish as it goes through the standard "don't go in that room" horror beats we've seen before. While the scares are great, some of the logic regarding why the parents didn't just burn the doll years ago requires the usual leap of faith. It misses a higher mark because the final part leans a little heavily into loud jump-scares and CGI that isn't quite as terrifying as the quiet dread of the first part. A few of the secondary orphan characters don't get much development, serving more as "scare targets" than actual people. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A total winner for the franchise and easily the best of the Annabelle films. It’s a rare sequel that takes everything that worked in the original and turns the volume up, delivering a story that is both creepy and emotionally grounded. While it doesn't quite hit the "epic status" of the main Conjuring films, it’s a sincere and terrifying addition to the universe. If you were disappointed by the first one, this is the one that’ll win you back. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Direct Reference: The film contains a subtle "Easter egg" featuring a photograph of Sister Charlotte with three other nuns in Romania—one of whom is Valak, the demon from The Conjuring 2. • Physical Prep: Actress Talitha Bateman was so dedicated to her role as Janice, who has polio, that she spent weeks learning how to use a period-accurate leg brace and crutches to make her struggle look as honest as possible. • Doll Upgrade: The Annabelle doll used in this film was redesigned to look slightly more "innocent" than the version seen in the other movies, showing how it gradually became more sinister as the demon's influence took hold. THE VIBE Like a dusty attic in the middle of a heatwave. It smells of old wood, mothballs, and the metallic scent of a rusty sewing machine.
