Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY This is the film that changed everything. Before 1989, the general public thought of Batman as a campy 60s throwback, but Tim Burton dragged the Caped Crusader back into the shadows. We follow a mysterious vigilante terrorising the criminals of a decaying, gothic Gotham City. Things get messy when a botched chemical plant heist transforms mob hood Jack Napier into the Joker, a flamboyant homicidal clown. It’s a stylish, moody, and atmospheric battle of wits that set the blueprint for the modern superhero blockbuster. THE PROS Michael Keaton is a win; his "quiet intensity" as Bruce Wayne made the dual identity feel sincere and believable. Then there’s Jack Nicholson, who is a total belter as the Joker—he brings a theatrical, menacing joy to the role that defines the entire film. The production design is a celebratory explosion of art deco and industrial grit; Anton Furst’s Gotham feels like a living, breathing character. Let’s not forget the Batmobile, which remains a sincere icon of automotive design. It’s a film that balances a dark tone with a grand, operatic sense of scale that still feels massive today. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because it’s an outstanding piece of cinema, but it misses the "epic status" 10/10 by a whisker. Some of the action choreography is a bit wet and stiff compared to modern standards, largely because the suit was so restrictive Keaton couldn't actually turn his head. The plot also takes a few liberties with the lore—like the Joker being the one who killed Bruce’s parents—which might be a bit of a head-scratcher for the comic book purists. It’s near-perfect, but just slightly hindered by the technical limitations of the late 80s. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Highly recommended—you need to watch this. It is a vault essential and a sincere landmark in film history. Go and watch it for the iconic Danny Elfman score and Nicholson’s legendary performance; it is the business when it comes to world-building and style. He used this feeling of isolation to help portray Bruce Wayne’s detached and brooding personality.• Art Deco Origins: To create the unique look of Gotham, the crew built a massive set at Pinewood Studios in England that covered most of the 95-acre backlot, making it one of the biggest sets ever constructed at the time. THE VIBE Like a steam-filled alleyway at 2 AM. It smells like old bricks, rain-slicked pavement, and expensive cologne. It makes you want to buy a long black coat, hang out on a gargoyle, and remind people that you are, in fact, Batman.
