Overview

King T'Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country's new leader. However, T'Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne by factions within his own country as well as without. Using powers reserved to Wakandan kings, T'Challa assumes the Black Panther mantle to join with ex-girlfriend Nakia, the queen-mother, his princess-kid sister, members of the Dora Milaje (the Wakandan 'special forces') and an American secret agent, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY T’Challa returns home to the hidden, high-tech African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King after his father’s death. But being the Black Panther isn't just about wearing a sleek vibranium suit; he’s immediately challenged by Erik Killmonger, a long-lost cousin with a massive chip on his shoulder and a plan to use Wakanda’s weapons to "liberate" the world. It’s a royal civil war that forces T’Challa to decide if Wakanda should stay hidden or step out of the shadows to lead a world that doesn't even know it exists. THE PROS This is epic status. It’s Marvel's most mature offering, swapping the usual quips for a sincere and quality story about legacy and identity. Michael B. Jordan is a total win as Killmonger; he’s easily one of the best villains in the MCU because his motivations actually make sense—you almost find yourself nodding along with him until he goes full tyrant. The world-building is quality, from the Afro-futuristic tech to the stunning costume designs that feel grounded in real culture. It’s a 9/10 because the action is punchy, especially the car chase in Busan which feels like a quality Bond flick with better gadgets. Letitia Wright and Danai Gurira are winners, bringing a lethal and hilarious energy that makes the female characters the real backbone of the nation. THE CONS It misses a 10/10 mark because the final underground fight between T’Challa and Killmonger looks a bit quality-deficient; the CGI on the suits gets a bit "rubbery" and loses the visceral weight of the waterfall duel. The pacing can feel slightly sluggish in the middle act during the political debates in the throne room, which might be a damp squib for anyone just looking for explosions. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Epic status and highly recommended. It’s a winner for the depth, the culture, and the best villain in years. Go and watch it for the "Is this your king?" scene—it’s quality drama. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Rhinos or Horses?: The armored rhinos used by the Border Tribe were actually large horses wearing motion-capture suits. Daniel Kaluuya had to learn to ride them as if they were 3,000-pound prehistoric beasts.• Scarification: Michael B. Jordan had to sit in the makeup chair for over two hours every day while four artists applied nearly 3,000 prosthetic "kill scars" to his body—each one representing a notch for his character's victims.• Digital Dining: In the lab scenes where Shuri is showing T’Challa the new tech, the scrolling data on the holographic glass contains a hidden sushi recipe—the legendary VFX easter egg that has now officially traveled all the way to Wakanda.
