Overview

For years, Blade has fought against the vampires in the cover of the night. But now, after falling into the crosshairs of the FBI, he is forced out into the daylight, where he is driven to join forces with a clan of human vampire hunters he never knew existed—The Nightstalkers. Together with Abigail and Hannibal, two deftly trained Nightstalkers, Blade follows a trail of blood to the ancient creature that is also hunting him—the original vampire, Dracula.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY The FBI has finally caught up with Blade, framing him for the murder of a human and forcing him into a corner. After a tragic loss, Blade teams up with the Nightstalkers—a group of young vampire hunters led by Abigail Whistler and a wisecracking ex-vampire named Hannibal King. They’re up against the "Drake," aka Dracula himself, who has been resurrected by a group of modern vamps to help them finally take over the world. Blade has to juggle his hatred for his new teammates while perfecting a biological weapon called "Daystar" that could wipe out the vampire race for good. THE PROS Ryan Reynolds is a win here; he brings a quality, foul-mouthed energy that basically serves as a prototype for his future as Deadpool. The action is punchy, and the gadgets—like the UV arc-bow—are epic status and look great in the fight scenes. It’s a 6/10 because it’s still a fun, mindless action flick with a quality soundtrack. Jessica Biel’s combat scenes are a winner, especially the way she uses music to time her kills. It’s decent for a late-night watch if you just want to see some vampires get dusted. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because Wesley Snipes feels quality-deficient this time around; he looks like he’d rather be anywhere else, and his lack of chemistry with the new cast makes the pacing feel sluggish. The depiction of Dracula is a proper damp squib—he’s just a buff bloke in a leather jacket rather than the terrifying ancient force he should be. It misses a higher mark because the plot is a bit of a mess and the humor often feels forced, clashing with the dark tone of the first two films. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent and highly recommended if you want to see Ryan Reynolds carry a movie on his back. It’s a winner for the fight choreography and the Nightstalkers' tech. Go and watch it to see where the franchise went off the rails—it’s quality cheese. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Eyes Wide Shut: Wesley Snipes famously refused to open his eyes for a scene in the morgue because he was so fed up with the production. The VFX team had to digitally paint eyes onto his eyelids in post-production, which remains one of the weirdest bits of trivia in Marvel history.• Method Madness: Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes reportedly didn't get along on set at all.
