Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY When the Pope unexpectedly dies, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running the Conclave—the secretive process of electing a new leader for the Catholic Church. As the world’s most powerful Cardinals lock themselves behind the Vatican doors, the holy mission quickly turns into a gritty political dogfight. Secrets, scandals, and backstabbing become the order of the day as different factions struggle for the future of the faith. It’s a tense, high-stakes thriller that treats the halls of the Vatican like a smoke-filled backroom in a government coup. THE PROS Ralph Fiennes is incredible, playing Lawrence with a quiet, exhausted dignity that anchors the whole film. The supporting cast—including Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow—are just as sharp, making the debates feel like life-or-death battles. It hits a 9 because the tension is relentless; every whisper and sideways glance feels loaded with consequence. The cinematography is stunning, using the red robes and cold stone of the Vatican to create a visual style that’s both beautiful and claustrophobic.
