Overview

After finding an ad online for “video work,” Sara, a video artist whose primary focus is creating intimacy with lonely men, thinks she may have found the subject of her dreams. She drives to a remote house in the forest and meets a man claiming to be a serial killer. Unable to resist the chance to create a truly shocking piece of art, she agrees to spend the day with him. However, as the day goes on, she discovers she may have dug herself into a hole from which she can’t escape.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Sara is a struggling video artist whose YouTube series "Encounters" is failing because she can’t find subjects weird enough to go viral. That changes when she responds to an ad from a man calling himself Aaron—the same unhinged killer from the first film, now going through a mid-life crisis and admitting he’s "lost his touch." He offers Sara a deal: film him for 24 hours, and he won’t kill her. It’s a brilliant, awkward, and deeply uncomfortable game of psychological cat-and-mouse where the line between the predator and the documentarian becomes dangerously blurred. THE PROS This is an 8/10 because it pulls off the impossible: it’s actually better than the original. Mark Duplass is a master of the "cringe-horror" genre, delivering a performance that is equal parts terrifying, pathetic, and oddly charming. It hits the mark because it flips the dynamic on its head—Sara (played brilliantly by Desiree Akhavan) isn't a victim; she’s just as manipulative and driven as the killer, leading to a "double-creep" energy that keeps you guessing. It’s a winner because it manages to be genuinely funny while maintaining a sense of pure, stomach-churning dread that most big-budget horror movies can't touch. Duplass and Akhavan worked from an outline, improvising almost all of their dialogue to ensure the reactions and the awkward silences felt completely authentic.• The "Aaron" Connection: In the first film, the killer used the name Josef. In this one, he uses Aaron—which was the name of the victim he killed at the end of the first movie. It’s a subtle, chilling detail that shows how he absorbs the identities of his victims.• Peachfuzz Returns: The iconic, terrifying wolf mask (Peachfuzz) makes a comeback. The production team had to find the exact same mass-produced mask used in the first film to maintain continuity, which is now a cult-classic item among horror fans. THE VIBE Like a Tinder date that goes from "weird" to "deadly" in thirty seconds. It smells like damp leaves, old flannel, and desperate ambition. It’s awkward, claustrophobic, and surprisingly funny. It makes you want to delete your Craigslist account, check your door locks, and realize that some stories are better left untold.
