Overview

After finding an ad online for “video work,” Sara, a video artist whose primary focus is creating intimacy with lonely men, thinks she may have found the subject of her dreams. She drives to a remote house in the forest and meets a man claiming to be a serial killer. Unable to resist the chance to create a truly shocking piece of art, she agrees to spend the day with him. However, as the day goes on, she discovers she may have dug herself into a hole from which she can’t escape.

    Creep 2 (2017) ​Rating: 8/10 ​It’s the rare sequel that actually improves on the original by leaning into the absolute absurdity of its own premise. Mark Duplass is back, and he's weirder than ever. ​ THE SUMMARY Our favorite polite psychopath is now going by "Aaron" and suffering from a mid-life crisis—basically, he’s bored of murdering people. He hires Sara, a struggling YouTuber who films eccentric Craigslist strangers, and tells her upfront: "I'm a serial killer, let's make a documentary." What follows is a twisted, awkward, and surprisingly intimate game of "Who’s the Real Freak?" ​ THE PROS The dynamic between Aaron and Sara is gold. Unlike the victim in the first film, Sara is unfazed by his antics, which totally throws him off his game. It’s a brilliant subversion that turns a horror movie into a dark, messed-up rom-com. Mark Duplass’s performance remains one of the most unsettlingly charming things in indie horror. ​ THE CONS Since it relies so heavily on the psychological "dance" between the two leads, the actual "horror" elements are pushed to the background until the very end. If you’re looking for high-speed chases or a high body count, the slow-burn, conversational pace might feel more "indie drama" than "slasher." ​ THE VERDICT A masterclass in how to do a found-footage sequel. It’s funny, deeply uncomfortable, and keeps you guessing about who is actually in control. An 8/10 that proves the second "creep" is the charm. ✨
