Overview

Looking for work, Aaron comes across a cryptic online ad: “$1,000 for the day. Filming service. Discretion is appreciated.” Low on cash and full of naiveté, he decides to go for it. He drives to a cabin in a remote mountain town where he meets Josef, his cinematic subject for the day. Josef is sincere and the project seems heartfelt, so Aaron begins to film. But as the day goes on, it becomes clear that Josef is not who he says, and his intentions are not at all pure.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Aaron is a cash-strapped videographer who answers a cryptic online ad for a one-day gig in a remote mountain town. He meets Josef, who claims he’s dying and wants to film a "video diary" for his unborn son. But as the day goes on, Josef’s requests get increasingly bizarre and his behavior shifts from quirky to predatory. It’s a gritty, fly-on-the-wall found footage thriller that explores the awkwardness of social boundaries and the genuine terror of being trapped with a nutcase who won't stop "joking." THE PROS Mark Duplass is incredible here; he plays Josef with a frantic, unsettling energy that makes you fluctuate between feeling sorry for him and wanting to run for the hills. It hits a 7 because it’s one of the few found footage movies that actually justifies its style—the camera is an active participant in the manipulation. The film is an honest look at "politeness" as a survival flaw; we watch Aaron stay in dangerous situations simply because he doesn't want to be rude.
