⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Terrence Howard and Esai Morales star as a pair of flawed detectives hunting a serial killer in the shadows of Little Rock, Arkansas. Bodies are turning up decapitated with mannequin heads left in their place, and the investigation gets messier when a new partner, Jaclyn (Nicky Whelan), is shoved onto the team by their captain (Alec Baldwin). As they navigate internal affairs inquiries, satanic dating sites, and their own dark secrets, the line between the law and the lawless starts to disappear. It’s a gritty Southern noir that tries to be a psychological thriller but ends up drowning in too many subplots and a bit of an identity crisis. THE PROS The casting is easily the biggest winner here; having heavyweights like Terrence Howard and Alec Baldwin together gives the film a high-quality feel that it wouldn't have had otherwise. Baldwin is particularly good as the sharp-tongued captain, delivering his lines with a sincere grit that provides the few highlights in a shaky script. It earns a 4/10 because the atmosphere is honest and moody, effectively using the Little Rock setting to create a sense of "minor league" urban decay that feels quite gripping. There are a few moments of shocking violence that actually land with some impact, and the trio of leads does their best to bring some weight to a story that is constantly trying to trip them up. THE CONS It lands a 4/10 because the script is a total clanger, overstuffed with twists and red herrings that make the narrative a massive head-scratcher. The middle part is incredibly sluggish, getting bogged down in messy affairs and side stories that never really connect or pay off in a satisfying way. It misses a higher mark because the characters are deeply unlikable—Esai Morales’s character is particularly quality-deficient in terms of morals, making it hard to actually root for the "heroes." The logic is often thin, and the "big reveal" feels rushed and unearned, leaving you more confused than shocked. At nearly two hours, it’s a bit of a slog that confuses "dark and edgy" with "convoluted and messy." THE VERDICT A 4/10. A sincere but sloppy crime thriller that is a winner only if you’re a die-hard fan of the cast and don’t mind a plot that makes very little sense.
