Overview

The X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe when one of their own, Jean Grey, starts to spiral out of control. During a rescue mission in outer space, Jean is nearly killed when she's hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY The X-Men franchise ends its long run with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang. Simon Kinberg takes a second shot at the legendary "Dark Phoenix" storyline, focusing on Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) as she’s hit by a mysterious cosmic force during a rescue mission in space. This power makes her infinitely stronger but also mentally unstable, turning her against her own family. As Professor X and Magneto clash over how to handle her, a generic group of shape-shifting aliens arrives to manipulate Jean for their own ends. It’s a somber, gritty take on the classic comic arc that struggles to find the emotional heart of the team. THE PROS Sophie Turner gives a sincere effort in the lead role, trying her best to ground Jean’s internal struggle with a performance that feels honest even when the script isn't doing her many favors. The opening space mission is a high-quality sequence that shows off some decent tension and visual effects. Michael Fassbender is, as always, a total winner; even in a movie that feels a bit quality-deficient, he brings a legendary gravity to Magneto that makes his scenes the best part of the flick. The score by Hans Zimmer is absolute quality, providing a moody and atmospheric backdrop that almost makes the film feel more epic than it actually is. THE CONS It lands a 4/10 because it feels like a repetitive slog through a story we’ve already seen done better. The script is a bit of a slow-roller, lacking the wit and chemistry that made earlier entries a total banger. The villains are an honest disappointment—a group of nameless, personality-free aliens that feel like a last-minute addition to give the X-Men something to punch. Many of the characters' motivations are a head-shaking moment, with long-time friends turning on each other for flimsy reasons. It misses a higher mark because it lacks the "epic status" energy required for a series finale, resulting in a film that feels small, tired, and ultimately a bit of a letdown for such a legendary franchise. THE VERDICT A 4/10. An honest attempt to do something more grounded that unfortunately falls flat. While there are some high-quality individual moments and a legendary score, the movie as a whole is a bit of a quality-deficient exit for the team. It’s a fair shout if you’re a completionist who needs to see every X-Men film, but for most, it’s a sincere reminder of how difficult it is to get this specific story right.
