Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY After years of being stuck in development hell, Ryan Reynolds finally got to play the "Merc with a Mouth" the way he was intended. Wade Wilson is a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary who falls for the brilliant Vanessa, only for a terminal cancer diagnosis to wreck their plans. Desperate for a cure, he undergoes a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers and a face like a topographical map of Utah. Breaking the fourth wall at every turn, Deadpool hunts down the man who ruined his life, all while cracking jokes that would make a sailor blush. THE PROS This earns its 9/10 and "Epic Status" because it completely reinvented the superhero genre when it needed it most. Ryan Reynolds is a total winner; his performance is sincere, hilarious, and legendary, proving he was born to wear the red spandex. It’s a 9/10 because the script is high-quality, managing to be a genuinely touching romance hidden inside an R-rated bloodbath. The banter between Deadpool and TJ Miller’s Weasel is absolute quality, and the low-budget approach actually works in its favor, forcing the film to rely on wit rather than just CGI bloat. The soundtrack is a total banger, mixing DMX with Wham! in a way that shouldn't work but somehow feels like a legendary shout for the character's chaotic energy. THE CONS It misses the perfect 10/10 mark because the villain, Ajax, is a bit of a clanger compared to the vibrant personality of Deadpool. He’s a bit of a standard "British bad guy" who feels a touch quality-deficient in terms of motivation. The final battle on the helicarrier scrap heap is a bit of a slow-roller and feels slightly smaller in scale compared to other "epic" comic book finales. Some of the CGI on Colossus is a bit of a head-scratcher in a few shots, occasionally pulling you out of the honest, gritty vibe the rest of the film works so hard to establish. THE VERDICT A 9/10. An epic, high-quality riot that is a winner for anyone tired of "safe" superhero movies. It’s a total banger that launched a legendary franchise and proved that R-rated comic book films can be massive hits. While the villain is a bit mid, the sheer charisma of Reynolds and the honest, funny script make it an absolute shout for a movie night. It hits the "epic status" mark with ease and remains a sincere favorite for fans everywhere. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Suit Troubles: The Deadpool suit originally had muscle inserts, but Ryan Reynolds was already so jacked from his high-quality training regimen that the suit looked "comically large" on him, so they had to strip the padding out.• Breaking the Bank: Because the studio slashed the budget by $7 million at the last minute, the writers had to cut a massive motorcycle chase and several gunfights. This led to the legendary joke where Deadpool leaves his duffel bag of guns in the taxi because he "forgot" them.• Hello Kitty: Deadpool’s obsession with Hello Kitty in the film is a high-quality nod to the character's official Twitter account, which, at the time of the movie's development, only followed one other account: Hello Kitty.
