⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Gru has officially hung up his villain suit to work for the Anti-Villain League, but things go south when he lets a 1980s-obsessed baddie named Balthazar Bratt escape. After getting sacked, Gru discovers he has a long-lost twin brother named Dru who lives in a massive pig-farming mansion and desperately wants to get into the family business of being bad. While Gru tries to use Dru to catch Bratt, the Minions go on a strike and end up in prison, and Agnes goes on a sincere, heart-melting quest to find a real-life unicorn. THE PROS This is a win because of Balthazar Bratt—he’s a total belter of a villain. His obsession with shoulder pads, keytars, and dance-fighting to Michael Jackson is a celebratory explosion of 80s nostalgia that’ll have the parents laughing more than the kids. Steve Carell pulls double duty as Gru and Dru, and his energy is punchy as ever. It’s a decent watch because it keeps the humor fast and light, and the Minions' "I’ve Got To Be Free" musical number in the prison is epic status comedy. It’s a good movie for a rainy afternoon when you just want something easy and cheerful. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the plot feels a bit scattered, like it’s trying to juggle too many balls at once. The whole "Dru" subplot is a bit of a head-scratcher; he’s basically just Gru with blonde hair and a high-pitched voice, and their sibling rivalry can feel a bit sluggish. It misses the 8/10 mark because the emotional heart that made the first one so special is a bit of a damp squib here, replaced by more slapstick and loud noises. If you aren't a fan of the yellow fellas, their side-story in the big house might feel a bit like filler. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and a recommendation for the little ones. It’s not exactly a vault essential like the original, but it’s a belter of an entry for the 80s soundtrack alone. Go and watch it for Bratt’s bubblegum weapons and the unicorn hunt—it’s a laugh. The director, Pierre Coffin, provides the voices for all 899 Minions in the movie!• Piggy Perfection: In Dru's mansion, there are hundreds of pig statues and paintings. This is a punchy nod to the fact that his "legit" business is being the largest pig farmer in Freedonia. THE VIBE Like a bowl of sugary cereal while wearing neon leg warmers. It smells like bubblegum, hairspray, and bacon. It makes you want to do a moonwalk, hug a fluffy goat, and realize that having a twin brother is mostly just double the trouble.
