⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 6/10 THE SUMMARY Bond's 20th outing starts with a bang as he’s captured and tortured in North Korea, but once he’s traded back, the film takes a hard turn into the surreal. 007 goes rogue to find the mole who betrayed him, leading him to a British billionaire with a taste for diamonds and a massive ice palace in Iceland. It’s a film that tries to celebrate forty years of Bond by throwing every possible trope at the screen—including invisible cars, gene-splicing, and a giant space laser. It’s the peak of the "gadget era," for better or worse. THE PROS The opening hovercraft chase through the demilitarized zone is a win and remains one of the more unique action sequences in the series. Toby Stephens brings a sincere, arrogant energy to Gustav Graves, and his sword fight with Bond is a total belter that feels much more grounded and dangerous than the rest of the movie. Rosamund Pike is excellent as Miranda Frost, providing a cool, double-crossing edge that keeps you guessing. It’s a celebratory explosion of Bond history, packed with "Easter eggs" for long-time fans who want to spot references to the older films. THE CONS It earns a 6/10 because it eventually collapses under the weight of some truly wonky CGI—the scene with Bond surfing a digital tidal wave is a massive head-scratcher that hasn't aged well at all. The invisible car is a bit wet and takes the "high-tech" vibe a step too far into the realm of science fiction. It misses the 7/10 mark because the plot becomes incredibly convoluted in the final act, trading genuine tension for a loud, messy climax inside a disintegrating plane. It’s a bit of a "guilty pleasure" watch rather than a high-quality thriller. THE VERDICT A 6/10. Decent enough if you want a bit of campy, over-the-top fun, but it’s definitely not one for the purists. It’s the film that eventually led the producers to hit the "reset" button for Casino Royale. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Cold Comfort: The "Ice Palace" was actually inspired by the real Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Iceland; the production had to dam the lagoon to keep the salt water out so it would freeze thick enough to drive the Aston Martin and Jaguar across it.• Halle’s Close Call: Halle Berry almost choked while filming a scene with a piece of fruit; Pierce Brosnan actually had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on her, proving he’s a hero both on and off the screen.• Record Cameo: Madonna not only provided the divisive theme song but also had a brief cameo as a fencing instructor named Verity, marking the first time a theme song artist appeared as a character in a Bond film. THE VIBE Like an explosion in a diamond factory—shiny, loud, and a bit chaotic. It smells like ozone and expensive champagne. It makes you want to go skiing, buy a very fast car, and maybe double-check your "invisible" settings before leaving the house.
