⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Stephen Strange is a world-class neurosurgeon whose ego is even bigger than his paycheck. After a horrific car crash turns his hands into useless meat, he spends his fortune on experimental surgeries that fail. Desperate, he travels to Kamar-Taj in Nepal, where he meets The Ancient One. Expecting a medical miracle, he instead gets a crash course in sorcery, alternate dimensions, and the fact that "reality" is just a suggestion. Strange has to master the mystic arts quickly to stop a rogue sorcerer named Kaecilius from handing Earth over to a primordial entity from the Dark Dimension called Dormammu. THE PROS The visuals are epic status; the "Inception" style city-bending and the psychedelic trip through the multiverse are quality and still look incredible today. Benedict Cumberbatch is a total win as Strange, nailing the transition from arrogant prick to a man willing to die a thousand times for the world. Tilda Swinton is quality as The Ancient One, bringing a calm but lethal energy to the role. It’s an 8/10 because it trades the usual "big explosion" finale for a punchy, brain-over-brawn time loop standoff that is pure genius. The Cloak of Levitation is a winner, practically becoming its own character with more personality than most humans. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the villain, Kaecilius, is a bit of a damp squib—Mads Mikkelsen is a quality actor, but he’s underused as a puppet for a bigger threat. The "romance" with Rachel McAdams’ character feels slightly sluggish and quality-deficient, mostly because she doesn't have much to do besides look worried in a hospital. It misses a 9/10 mark because it follows the Marvel origin formula a bit too closely, feeling like 'Iron Man' with magic circles instead of repulsors. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and highly recommended if you want your superhero flicks with a side of mind-bending philosophy. It’s a winner for the visual creativity and Cumberbatch's performance. Go and watch it for the "Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain" scene—it’s quality. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Mirror Moves: To make the spell-casting look unique, the filmmakers hired a professional finger-tutting dancer to help the actors develop complex, rhythmic hand movements that look like they’re actually weaving geometry in the air.• The Real Deal: During filming in Nepal, Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted by fans while in full costume. He reportedly walked into a local comic book shop and bought a 'Doctor Strange' comic, much to the shock of the cashier.• Digital Dining: In the library of Kamar-Taj and on the high-tech medical monitors at the hospital, the scrolling digital code contains a hidden sushi recipe—the favorite recurring easter egg of the VFX teams that have handled Marvel’s biggest hits for over two decades. THE VIBE Like a kaleidoscope made of velvet and incense. It smells like old books, sterile operating theaters, and Himalayan mountain air.
