Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Luc Besson returns to his "maximalist" roots with Dracula: A Love Tale (released July 2025 in Europe, Feb 2026 in the US). This isn't your grandfather’s brooding vampire; it’s a high-octane, visually explosive reimagining of the 15th-century prince. After his wife Elisabeta is murdered, Vlad (Caleb Landry Jones) flips the table on God and signs up for the eternal blood-sucking package. Fast forward to 19th-century Paris, and he’s convinced a young woman named Mina is his reincarnated bride. It’s essentially a "Gothic John Wick" with a soundtrack by Danny Elfman that hits you like a freight train. THE PROS Caleb Landry Jones is a "Guaranteed Banger." He plays the Count with a twitchy, animalistic intensity that makes you feel like he might actually bite the camera. Christoph Waltz as the vampire-hunting priest is pure cinema—he brings that polite but terrifying energy we haven't seen since Inglourious Basterds. Visually, Besson goes all out; the battle scenes in 1480 Walachia are brutal and sweeping, and the 19th-century asylum sets look like something out of a haunted Victorian fever dream. It’s a Masterpiece of production design that makes the $100 million budget visible in every single frame. THE CONS The script can be a bit... "Besson-y." It’s loud, it’s melodramatic, and it lacks the subtle, creeping dread of something like Robert Eggers' Nosferatu. At 129 minutes, it spends a lot of time on "Vampire Lore 101" and doesn't actually get Dracula and Mina into the same room until about 80 minutes in. The dialogue is often heavy-handed, with characters explaining their feelings like they’re shouting across a canyon. It’s a 7/10 because while it’s a feast for the eyes, the heart of the "Love Tale" feels a bit buried under the CGI gargoyles and exploding crosses. THE VERDICT A solid 7/10. It’s "The Business" if you want a vampire movie that feels like a rock concert. It’s big, dumb, and beautiful—a perfect popcorn flick for people who think Bram Stoker’s original novel was a little too "quiet." It misses the 9/10 mark because it values style over substance, but man, what a style it is. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Luc Besson reportedly had the idea for this film for over a decade but waited until the technology could capture the "gargoyle minions" exactly as he imagined them. Also, the film features Thalia Besson (the director's daughter) in a supporting role, continuing the family's presence in his filmography. Fun fact: This is the first time Danny Elfman has scored a Luc Besson film, and he supposedly used a 100-piece orchestra and a full Gothic choir to get that "Heaven-defying" sound. THE VIBE Like a velvet cape soaked in high-octane fuel. It’s luxurious and dark, but it’s mostly just waiting for someone to drop a match so it can go up in spectacular, operatic flames.
