Overview

Driver is a skilled Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. Though he projects an icy exterior, lately he's been warming up to a pretty neighbor named Irene and her young son, Benicio. When Irene's husband gets out of jail, he enlists Driver's help in a million-dollar heist. He’s a man of few words and strict rules, but his solitary life is upended when he falls for his neighbor, Irene, and her young son. When her husband is released from prison and sucked back into a botched heist, the Driver steps in to protect the family. What starts as a slick heist flick quickly spirals into a hyper-violent, neon-soaked nightmare as he goes up against a pair of ruthless mob bosses. THE PROS This is the definition of cool. Ryan Gosling delivers a masterclass in "less is more," using his silence and a silver scorpion jacket to create one of the most iconic characters of the decade. The film hits a 9 because it balances a beautiful, synth-pop aesthetic with bursts of gritty, stomach-churning violence that feel honest and earned. Nicolas Winding Refn’s direction turns Los Angeles into a dreamlike wasteland, and the soundtrack is an absolute banger that defined an entire era of "outrun" vibes.
