⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Directed by Ron Howard, this is a gritty survival thriller based on the bizarre true story known as "The Galápagos Affair." In the 1930s, several groups of Europeans escape to the uninhabited island of Floreana to start their own utopias. First, there’s a German doctor (Jude Law) and his partner (Vanessa Kirby) seeking a philosophical life; then a broken soldier (Daniel Brühl) and his pregnant wife (Sydney Sweeney) looking for a fresh start. Finally, a hedonistic Baroness (Ana de Armas) arrives with her lovers, planning to build a luxury hotel. Naturally, these clashing visions of paradise quickly devolve into a chaotic mess of jealousy, betrayal, and eventually, murder. THE PROS The cast is phenomenal, with Jude Law delivering an intense, raw performance as a man losing his grip on his own ideals. Sydney Sweeney is the real surprise here; she brings a quiet strength to her role that makes her one of the most sympathetic characters on the island. It’s an 8/10 because Ron Howard steps away from his usual "safe" style to give us something much darker, more perverse, and more visually striking. The Australian filming locations stand in perfectly for the Galápagos, looking beautiful but feeling incredibly harsh and claustrophobic. The slow-burn tension of the first part is excellent, making the inevitable descent into violence feel earned and grounded in honest human frustration. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the middle part is quite sluggish, spending a long time on the bickering between the different camps before the real action kicks in. While Vanessa Kirby is great, her character feels slightly underserved by the script, often sidelined while the more eccentric personalities take over.
