Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) is back for the third time, and this time it’s personal—mostly because the budget didn't allow for much else. After the daughter of a Hong Kong tech mogul is kidnapped and thrown into a formidable Latvian prison known as "Devil’s Station," Breslin is hired to get her out. To raise the stakes, his own girlfriend (Jaime King) is snatched by the same kidnapper, who happens to be the son of Breslin’s former bitter partner. Along with Trent DeRosa (Dave Bautista) and Hush (50 Cent), Breslin has to stop "escaping" prisons and start breaking into them to crack some skulls and settle old scores. THE PROS If you’re here for the "Bautista Smash," you’re in luck. Dave Bautista doesn't have much screentime, but when he does show up, he uses a literal shotgun to turn people into confetti—it’s the most "80s action" the movie gets. The fight choreography is a significant step up from the disastrous second film (Hades); the brawls are grittier, bloodier, and feel like they actually have some weight behind them. It’s a "Guaranteed Banger" for those who just want to see Stallone look tired and punch people in a dark hallway for 90 minutes. It also ditches the sci-fi neon of the second film for a more grounded, grimy aesthetic that fits the franchise better. THE CONS It feels incredibly cheap. Most of the movie takes place in a dark, damp basement in Mansfield, Ohio (the "Latvian prison"), and you can practically smell the mildew through the screen. 50 Cent is essentially a glorified extra, Jaime King is relegated to a "damsel in distress" role that feels outdated, and the plot is a paper-thin revenge story we’ve seen a thousand times. Stallone is clearly the best part, but even he looks like he’d rather be anywhere else—perhaps on the set of a movie with a catering budget. It’s a 4/10 because while it’s better than the second one, it’s a massive drop from the clever, "puzzle-solving" fun of the original Schwarzenegger team-up. THE VERDICT A 4/10. It’s "The Business" if you’re a Stallone completionist or just need some mindless background noise while you do laundry. It’s not a "Masterpiece," and it’s certainly not a 9/10, but it functions as a serviceable, straight-to-video action flick. Just don't go in expecting any "genius escape plans"—this one is more of a "loud entrance plan." INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Stallone was so embarrassed by the second film, Escape Plan 2: Hades, that he publicly called it "beyond awful" and promised fans that The Extractors would be a return to form. The film was shot in just 17 days at the Ohio State Reformatory—the same prison used in The Shawshank Redemption. Also, despite being the third lead, Dave Bautista reportedly shot all of his scenes in a single week. Fun fact: The title was originally just Escape Plan 3: Devil’s Station, but it was changed to The Extractors late in production to make it sound more like a standalone spin-off. THE VIBE Like a rusted toolbox in a damp garage. It’s not pretty, it’s seen better days, and it only has one or two tools that actually still work, but it’ll get a simple job done if you’re desperate.
