⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY A relentlessly mean, claustrophobic, and blood-drenched nightmare that successfully injects the nasty energy of New French Extremity into the legendary horror franchise. Directed by Sébastien Vaniček, the story follows Alice, a grieving woman who heads to a remote lakehouse to seek solace with her estranged in-laws after her husband's sudden death. The awkward family gathering quickly descends into a chaotic bloodbath when the Book of the Dead is uncovered, unleashing the Kandarian demon to possess the family members one by one and turn the secluded home into a burning, inescapable slaughterhouse. THE PROS Sébastien Vaniček brings a brilliantly aggressive, fast-paced directing style that makes the film feel like an absolute endurance test of pure terror. Souheila Yacoub is spectacular as Alice, delivering a fierce, gritty survival performance that handles both the physical brutality and the heavy, emotional trauma of her past incredibly well. The sound design and practical effects are phenomenal, using wince-inducing, low-tech gore—including a particularly horrific stair-lift sequence and a brutal jackhammer showdown—that will leave hardcore horror fans in absolute glee. THE CONS The film leans so heavily into non-stop, exhausting cruelty that it completely strips away the dark, campy humour that Sam Raimi originally made a staple of the franchise. While the isolated lakehouse setting builds incredible tension early on, the final act relies on a couple of very convenient character decisions and sudden twists just to keep the meat grinder moving. THE VERDICT A great 8/10. It is a vicious, visually striking, and intensely draining horror sequel that easily stands out as the most brutal and mean-spirited entry in the entire series.
