⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Moving the chaos from the woods to a crumbling Los Angeles apartment block, the story follows Beth, a guitar technician who visits her estranged sister Ellie and Ellie’s three kids. When an earthquake uncovers a hidden vault containing the Necronomicon, the "Book of the Dead" is unleashed once again. Ellie becomes possessed by a particularly nasty Deadite, forcing Beth into a claustrophobic battle for survival against her own flesh and blood. It’s a gritty, urban reimagining of the franchise that swaps slapstick for pure, unadulterated carnage. THE PROS This is an absolute win for fans of high-tension horror. It hits an 8 because Alyssa Sutherland’s performance as the possessed Ellie is legendary; she’s genuinely terrifying, bringing a pained, elastic energy to the role that will stay with you. The film is honest about its brutality, utilizing practical effects that make every stab and slice feel visceral. Moving the setting to a high-rise adds a fresh layer of isolation—when the lift is out and the stairs are gone, you’re well and truly stuck. It manages to honor the Raimi legacy with clever nods while carving out its own dark, mean-spirited identity that feels modern and sharp. THE CONS It stays at an 8 because the early setup with the family drama feels a bit like filler compared to the high-octane madness of the second half. It misses a higher mark because some of the "rules" of the Deadites feel a bit inconsistent compared to previous films, and the logic of the book’s discovery is a bit of a convenience. While the gore is top-tier, the relentless screaming and loud sound design can be a bit exhausting by the time the final act rolls around. If you’re a fan of the "Ash" era humor, you might find this version a touch too bleak for a Friday night. THE VERDICT 8/10. A gritty, blood-soaked, and epic addition to the franchise. It’s an honest horror film that doesn't pull its punches and proves that the Evil Dead can be just as scary in the city as it was in the cabin. THE VIBE Like a lift stuck between floors in the dark. It smells of copper, rotting wood, and the metallic tang of a revving chainsaw.
