⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Clear Rivers might be the only one left from the first flight, but Death isn't finished with his list. Kimberly Corman has a visceral premonition of a horrific multi-car pile-up on Route 23, caused by a logging truck losing its load. She manages to block the on-ramp, saving a group of strangers, but Death starts picking them off in the order they should have died on the tarmac. To survive, the group has to team up with Clear and figure out a way to beat the design—this time involving the mysterious concept of "new life" to tip the scales. THE PROS This is a total win for sequels. It takes the original concept and turns the volume up to eleven with some of the most iconic set pieces in horror history. The motorway pile-up is epic status—it’s a sincere masterpiece of action filmmaking that made every driver in the world terrified of being behind a logging truck. It’s highly recommended because the kills are punchy, creative, and use incredible practical effects that still look grisly today. The "glass pane" and "barbed wire" scenes are absolute belters of suspense. It’s a 9/10 because it’s faster, bloodier, and more celebratory in its chaos than the first one. THE CONS It earns a 9/10 because some of the "new life" logic toward the end can be a sincere bit of a head-scratcher if you look at it too closely. The acting from the supporting cast is a bit of a damp squib compared to Ali Larter’s return, and the pacing can feel a tiny bit sluggish during the heavy exposition scenes in the hospital. It only misses the 10/10 mark because it loses some of the eerie, unseen dread of the original in favor of over-the-top gore, but for a slasher fan, it’s a fair trade. THE VERDICT A 9/10. Highly recommended and a vault essential for the genre. It contains what is arguably the best opening sequence in horror history. Go and watch it for the "Airbags" scare and the logging truck chaos—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Real Logs: While most of the logs in the pile-up were CGI or lightweight props, the ones that actually bounce on the road were real. The crew found that they couldn't get the "bounce" right with fakes, so they used real timber, which made the stunt incredibly dangerous.• Highway Lockdown: The filming of the pile-up took place on a real highway in British Columbia. They had to shut down a several-mile stretch for weeks, which caused a sincere bit of local traffic chaos, but it was worth it for the scale of the scene.• Familiar Faces: The kid who nearly gets hit by the van at the end of the movie is the same actor who played the young boy in the background of the first film’s school scenes—a punchy little nod to the "design" spanning across the series. THE VIBE Like driving on a rainy motorway with your music up too loud. It smells like burning rubber, pine air freshener, and hospital antiseptic. It makes you want to change lanes immediately if you see a truck carrying pipes, stay out of elevators, and realize that luck is just Death taking a breather.
