    ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY An unexploded WWII-era bomb is unearthed on a busy construction site in central London, triggering a massive military evacuation and a total blackout of the area. While Major Will Tranter (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and his bomb disposal unit race against a literal ticking clock to defuse the device, a crew of professional thieves led by Karalis (Theo James) and "X" (Sam Worthington) use the chaos as the perfect cover. Their goal? To drill into a nearby bank vault and vanish with millions in cash and jewels before the military detonates the bomb. It’s a high-tension cross-cut between the delicate, "walking on eggshells" work of the soldiers and the brutal, sledgehammer violence of the heist. THE PROS David Mackenzie brings that same gritty, propulsive energy he had in 'Hell or High Water' to the streets of London. The premise is a winner; using a bomb disposal as a distraction for a heist is pure quality and keeps the tension high from the first minute. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is punchy as the sweating, high-stakes Major, while Theo James continues his "gentleman-thug" hot streak with a sincere, calculating performance. It’s a 7/10 because the sound design is epic status—the way the film cuts between the near-silence of the bomb site and the deafening noise of the vault drilling is quality cinema. The location work on Edgware Road is also a winner, making the deserted city streets feel haunting and authentic rather than like a studio set. THE CONS It earns a 7/10 because the characters are all variations on the "Tough Guy" archetype, making the emotional stakes feel a bit quality-deficient compared to the technical thrills. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is quality, but she’s stuck in a bit of a damp squib role as a police officer who spends most of the movie looking confused by the plot twists. It misses an 8/10 mark because some of the "double-crossing" in the final act feels a bit forced and predictable for the genre. At 96 minutes, it’s lean and mean, but that also means some of the secondary heist members feel like background noise without much of a backstory. THE VERDICT A 7/10. Decent and highly recommended—it’s a stylish, stripped-down thriller that prizes momentum over depth. A winner for its original premise and the sheer tension of the "blackout" heist. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Mock Afghanistan: While the movie features flashbacks to a tour of duty in Afghanistan, the crew didn't actually leave the UK. Those scenes were shot in Wrotham Quarry in Kent, where the sand used for glass production provided a sincere, dusty stand-in for the war zone. • Three-Minute Windows: To film the deserted Edgware Road scenes, the production had to negotiate for months with Transport for London.
