Overview

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY The world is basically a giant ant farm, and the Titans are the ones holding the magnifying glass. Five years after Godzilla levelled San Francisco, a secret agency called Monarch is trying to track down dozens of other "monsters" hiding in the earth. A rogue eco-terrorist group decides to wake them all up at once, thinking they'll "heal" the planet. Enter Ghidorah—a three-headed golden dragon from space who wants to be the new boss. Godzilla has to team up with Mothra to settle the score, while the humans mostly just fly around in a massive jet trying not to get stepped on. THE PROS This is a win for the pure, unadulterated scale of the thing. The monster designs are epic status—Ghidorah feels genuinely god-like, and Mothra’s entrance is a celebratory explosion of color. It’s highly recommended because the music and sound design are absolute belters; they even brought back the classic Godzilla theme that’ll give any fan goosebumps. It’s a good movie because it treats these creatures like ancient deities rather than just big animals. The final brawl in Boston is a sincere spectacle that looks like a moving oil painting of the apocalypse. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, once again, the human characters can be a bit of a head-scratcher. The family drama feels a sincere bit sluggish compared to the giant dragon-on-lizard violence happening outside the window. The pacing is a bit all over the shop, and there’s so much rain, snow, and smoke during the fights that it can be a bit hard to see who’s biting who. It misses the 9/10 mark because it takes itself a bit too seriously for a film about a giant moth, but it’s still a punchy watch. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a recommendation if you’ve got a massive telly and a decent soundbar. It’s a vault essential for the Ghidorah vs. Godzilla showdown alone. Go and watch it for the "Burning Godzilla" moment and Bear McCreary’s incredible score—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Head Games: To give Ghidorah more personality, the filmmakers used three different actors in motion-capture suits to play the three heads simultaneously. The middle head was the "leader," while the other two were more like aggressive siblings.• Mothra’s Sound: Mothra’s chirping sound is actually the same audio file used in the original 1961 Japanese movie, just remastered to sound a bit more modern and punchy.• Hidden Names: If you look at the Monarch computer screens, many of the Titan outposts are numbered after the years the original versions of those monsters first appeared in cinema. THE VIBE Like standing in a hurricane while a heavy metal band plays in the background. It smells like sulfur, wet pavement, and ancient dust. It makes you want to look at the mountains a bit more suspiciously and realize that we’re really just guests on this planet.
