Overview

Tommy, a volatile 19-year-old, revels in drugs, parties and violence. After getting separated from his friends on a drunken bender, he is abducted by a shadowy figure. He wakes to find himself imprisoned in the basement of a remote Yorkshire house, inhabited by a very strange family. But what unfolds is not what he could possibly expect.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Forget everything you know about the "man’s best friend" cliché, because Good Boy is a proper psychological head-scratcher. It follows Sigrid, who meets a charming, wealthy lad named Christian on a dating app. Everything is going swimmingly until she heads back to his place and discovers he lives with a man who dresses up and acts like a literal dog. It is a bizarre, tense, and deeply uncomfortable dive into how much weirdness someone is willing to tolerate for the sake of love and a posh lifestyle. THE PROS The film is a masterclass in building genuine dread without relying on jump scares or buckets of gore. Gard Løkke is fantastic as Christian, playing him with a polished, slightly-too-perfect energy that makes the situation even creepier. The physical performance of the man playing the dog, Frank, is actually quite impressive and deeply unsettling—you will find yourself watching his ears and tail for any sign of "human" movement. It is a bold, original story that feels like an extended, twisted episode of Black Mirror, and it keeps you guessing about who the real predator is right until the final act. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because, while the concept is brilliant, the second half takes a turn into more familiar thriller territory that loses a bit of that unique "what on earth am I watching" spark. Some of Sigrid’s decisions might make you want to yell at the telly, as she overlooks some massive red flags that even the most desperate dater would usually run from. It is a bit of a Languid Burn in places, so if you are looking for a fast-paced slasher, this might feel a little slow for your liking. THE VERDICT An 8/10. This is a good film that is perfect for anyone who wants something completely outside the box. It is a genuine, unsettling belter that will definitely give you and your mates plenty to talk about after the credits roll. If you are tired of the same old predictable horror tropes, this is a vault essential. Just maybe don't watch it right before you head out on a first date. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Barking Mad: To keep the performance authentic, the actor playing Frank the dog did not speak to the rest of the cast on set while in costume, staying in character to heighten the awkward tension during filming.• Northern Exposure: While the story is universal in its weirdness, the film is part of a new wave of Scandinavian "creepy cinema" that focuses on the darkness hiding behind polite, modern society. THE VIBE Like a fancy dinner party where someone is eating off the floor, the smell of expensive cologne mixed with dog biscuits, and a constant, nagging feeling that you should have stayed at home. It is stylish, perverted, and surprisingly thought-provoking.
