Overview

John Garrity, his estranged wife and their young son embark on a perilous journey to find sanctuary as a planet-killing comet hurtles toward Earth. ⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 8/10 THE SUMMARY Forget the usual "hero saves the world" nonsense; this is a frantic, boots-on-the-ground survival story. A massive planet-killing comet is heading for Earth, and Gerard Butler’s character, John Garrity, is one of the few selected for a secret government bunker. The catch? He’s got to get his estranged wife and diabetic son to the evacuation point while society is melting down in real-time. It’s a desperate race against the clock through gridlocked motorways, panicked crowds, and falling chunks of space rock that are levelling entire cities. THE PROS This is a win because it focuses on the human panic rather than just the CGI explosions. Gerard Butler is a total belter here, playing a regular, terrified dad instead of his usual "punching-the-president-back-to-health" persona. It’s highly recommended because it captures the sincere dread of a global collapse—the scene at the airbase is epic status tension. It’s a good movie because it’s punchy and visceral; it makes you wonder what you’d actually do if the world was ending in 24 hours. More "The Road" than "Armageddon," and all the better for it. THE CONS It earns an 8/10 because the sub-plot with the son’s insulin is a bit of a head-scratcher—how many times can one family lose a medical bag in a crisis? The pacing can feel a sincere bit sluggish in the middle act when they get separated, and some of the side characters are a tad "villain-of-the-week." It misses a 9/10 because the ending feels a bit predictable, but for a disaster flick, it’s still a celebratory explosion of grit and heart. THE VERDICT An 8/10. A good movie and a total recommendation if you want a disaster film with actual brains. It’s a vault essential for the genre that’ll have you checking the sky every five minutes. Go and watch it for the motorway chaos and the final countdown—it’s a belter. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Neill Blomkamp's Comet: Originally, Chris Evans was set to star and Neill Blomkamp (District 9) was supposed to direct. When they dropped out, the film took a much more grounded, realistic turn with the current crew.• Real Science: The comet "Clarke" is named after Arthur C. Clarke, the legendary sci-fi author of *2001: A Space Odyssey*. The filmmakers consulted with NASA experts to make the atmospheric pressure waves and impact effects look as sincere as possible.• Location Swap: While the movie is set in the US and Canada, a lot of the filming actually took place in Iceland and Georgia. The "Greenland" bunker scenes used real military-style locations to keep the vibe claustrophobic and authentic. THE VIBE Like a panic attack in a traffic jam. It smells like exhaust fumes, burnt metal, and rain. It makes you want to pack an emergency bag, hug your family, and realize that when the sky starts falling, the biggest threat is usually the person standing next to you.
