Overview

After having successfully eluded the authorities for years, Hannibal peacefully lives in Italy in disguise as an art scholar. Trouble strikes again when he's discovered leaving a deserving few dead in the process. He returns to America to make contact with now disgraced Agent Clarice Starling, who is suffering the wrath of a malicious FBI rival as well as the media.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 9/10 THE SUMMARY Forget the movies for a second—this series is a hallucinatory, high-art reimagining of the Lecter mythos. It follows the "will-they-won't-they" (but with murder) relationship between the overly empathetic profiler Will Graham and the world’s most sophisticated cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. It’s basically a forensic procedural directed by someone who had a nightmare in an art gallery, turning every crime scene into a gothic masterpiece. THE PROS Mads Mikkelsen is the definitive Hannibal. While Hopkins was a caged animal, Mads is a shark in a three-piece suit—elegant, terrifying, and strangely hypnotic. The chemistry between him and Hugh Dancy is the beating heart of the show, creating a psychological tug-of-war that’s more intense than any action scene. Visually, it’s the most beautiful thing to ever air on network TV; the "food porn" is so well-shot you’ll feel guilty for getting hungry while he’s cooking "business associates." THE CONS It is incredibly "extra." The dialogue is so heavy with metaphors and philosophical waxing that sometimes you just want them to say "he’s the killer" instead of reciting a poem about stag antlers. The pacing in Season 3 also takes a massive detour into slow-motion Italian scenery that might test your patience if you’re here for the cat-and-mouse thrills. THE VERDICT A "Guaranteed Banger" for anyone who likes their horror with a side of existential dread and a glass of Chianti. It’s a miracle this aired on NBC and not a premium cable channel. It’s dark, bloody, and deeply queer in the most gothic way possible. If you can handle the gore, it’s a feast. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA All the food on the show was styled by world-renowned chef José Andrés. He worked closely with the creators to make sure that even though the "meat" was human in the script, the recipes and techniques were 100% culinary-accurate. Also, Lawrence Fishburne (Jack Crawford) and Gina Torres (Bella Crawford) were married in real life during filming, which is why their on-screen marriage feels so gut-wrenchingly authentic. THE VIBE Like being trapped in a velvet-lined coffin while a very polite man explains exactly why he’s about to eat your liver. Terrifying, but you can't deny the aesthetic.
