⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 4/10 THE SUMMARY James Bamford’s Hard Home is a high-tech revenge thriller that attempts to blend Home Alone with a gritty slasher flick. Simone Kessell stars as Mary, a grieving mother who transforms her smart home into a lethal fortress to trap the serial killer (Andrew Howard) who murdered her daughter. As she lures him into her web, a deadly cat-and-mouse game ensues, powered by advanced security systems and a twelve-year background in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It’s a film that promises a clever, modern twist on the "trapped in a house" subgenre but often struggles to keep its own logic together. THE PROS Simone Kessell is the absolute winner here; she brings an honest, simmering rage to the role of Mary that keeps you somewhat invested even when the script starts to fray. The practical gore effects are high-quality and surprisingly grim, especially during the final confrontation—there’s a visceral, gritty energy to the violence that fans of "hard" thrillers will appreciate. It’s a 4/10 because the initial setup of the house is genuinely interesting, and the film manages to build a decent amount of claustrophobic tension in the first part. Andrew Howard also deserves credit for playing a silent, creepy antagonist who manages to feel like a real threat through physical presence alone. THE CONS It lands a 4/10 because the logic is a bit of a clanger; the "high-tech" traps often feel more like minor inconveniences than lethal deterrents, making the killer’s ability to survive them feel unearned. The middle part is quite sluggish, bogged down by repetitive flashbacks that seem more like padding than essential storytelling. It misses a higher mark because of a paper-thin script that relies on convenient character skills—like Mary suddenly having expert dark-web knowledge—to move the plot forward. The sub-plot involving a nosy neighbor and an ex-husband is a total head-scratcher that adds nothing to the stakes and just drags out the runtime. Overall, it feels like a highlight reel of better films like Panic Room or Enough but without any of the wit or soul. THE VERDICT A 4/10. A sincere but ultimately quality-deficient thriller that fails to live up to its "epic status" potential. While Simone Kessell delivers a solid performance, the movie is let down by poor pacing and a lack of narrative depth. It’s a decent enough watch if you’re a die-hard fan of the genre and just want to see some creative kills, but for most, it’ll feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. Definitely not a banger, and certainly not a patch on the classics we’ve been reviewing lately. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • Action Pedigree: Director James Bamford is a veteran stunt coordinator who worked extensively on the CW show Arrow, which explains why the hand-to-hand combat in the film feels so much more polished than the actual script. • Silent Killer: Andrew Howard, who plays the "Diablo" killer, doesn't have a single line of dialogue in the entire movie, relying entirely on facial expressions and body language to portray his character's malice. • Building the Trap: The production took place in Bulgaria, where the "smart home" set was custom-built to allow for the complex practical effects and camera movements required for the various booby traps. THE VIBE Like a faulty security system. It smells of burnt wiring, ozone, and the metallic tang of a cold basement floor.
