Overview

In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds, lead by Lt. Aldo Raine soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.

⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 10/10 THE SUMMARY In Nazi-occupied France, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are dropped behind enemy lines with one simple mission: collecting Nazi scalps. Led by Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), they’re on a collision course with Shosanna, a cinema owner seeking her own burning revenge, and Col. Hans Landa, a polyglot detective who’s basically the human personification of a predatory snake. It all leads to a massive, ahistorical "what-if" finale in a movie theater that literally rewrites the end of WWII. THE PROS This is Tarantino at the absolute peak of his powers. The opening scene in the farmhouse is a masterpiece of tension—it’s just two men talking over milk, yet it’s scarier than most slasher movies. Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa is a "Guaranteed Banger" performance; he managed to be charming, polite, and completely monstrous all at once, winning an Oscar for his trouble. The film is a love letter to cinema itself, using the "power of film" (and highly flammable nitrate stock) to defeat the ultimate evil. It’s funny, brutal, and incredibly smart. THE CONS If you’re looking for a historically accurate documentary, you are going to have a very bad time. Tarantino doesn't just bend history; he snaps it over his knee. Also, roughly 70% of the movie is in French, German, or Italian—so if you have a deep-seated hatred for subtitles, this might feel like a very long literacy test. Some scenes, like the basement tavern standoff, go on for so long they might test your patience if you’re just here for the "scalping" promised in the trailer. THE VERDICT A perfect 10 and one of the best films of the 21st century. It’s a "messterpiece" that proves dialogue can be just as explosive as a grenade. Whether you’re here for the "Bear Jew" with a baseball bat or the sheer tension of a strudel-eating scene, this movie delivers on every level. It’s bold, blood-soaked, and utterly unforgettable. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA Christoph Waltz literally saved the movie; Tarantino was going to scrap the project because he thought the character of Hans Landa was "unplayable" until Waltz walked in. Also, in the scene where Diane Kruger’s character is strangled, those are actually Tarantino’s hands doing the squeezing because he didn't trust the other actors to get the "real" look of choking right. Oh, and the misspelled title is intentional—Tarantino calls it a "Basquiat-esque touch," though he’s never fully explained why he left the 'u' in "Inglourious" and the 'e' out of "Basterds." THE VIBE Like a high-stakes poker game played with live ammunition in a room full of dynamite. Sophisticated, violent, and deeply satisfying.
