⭐ Insomniacs Rating: 7/10 THE SUMMARY Set before the haunting of the Lambert family, this prequel follows a teenage girl named Quinn who tries to contact her late mother, only to accidentally invite a far more sinister entity into her life. Bedridden after a horrific accident, Quinn becomes the target of "The Man Who Can't Breathe," a wheezing, skeletal figure that wants to drag her soul into the abyss. Out of options, her father seeks help from a retired Elise Rainier, who must overcome her own grief and fear of the dark realm to save the girl from becoming a permanent resident of The Further. THE PROS This is a solid return to the gritty tension that made the first film a hit. It hits a 7 because Leigh Whannell, taking over the director's chair, brings a fresh but faithful energy to the series, focusing on the claustrophobia of being trapped in your own body while a ghost stalks you. The performance from Stefanie Scott is honest and vulnerable, making Quinn’s helplessness feel visceral. The "Man Who Can't Breathe" is a genuinely creepy villain, using his rhythmic, rattling breath to build a sense of dread that doesn't rely on CGI. Seeing the origin of the Specs and Tucker partnership adds a much-needed bit of banter that balances out the darker themes of isolation and loss. THE CONS It stays at a 7 because it follows the established 'Insidious' blueprint a bit too closely, making some of the scares feel like they’re being ticked off a checklist. It misses a higher mark because the middle section drags as Elise hesitates to use her powers, which can feel a bit repetitive for those who already know she’s a total pro in the other movies. The "Further" continues to be a bit hit-or-miss visually; when the lights go up and we see the ghosts clearly, they lose a bit of that raw, grit-induced terror they had when they were just shadows in the corner of a room. THE VERDICT 7/10. A smart, well-executed prequel that proves there’s still plenty of life in the franchise. It’s an honest, scary, and emotional journey that serves as a great bridge to the later films. If you want a horror that’s better than the average sequel, this is a fair shout. INSOMNIAC TRIVIA • To prepare for the role of a girl being haunted, Stefanie Scott was made to listen to dark, abrasive music on loop while sitting in a dark room to help her tap into a genuine sense of isolation. • This was Leigh Whannell’s directorial debut; he had previously written the first two films and co-created the 'Saw' franchise, making him a veteran of the gritty horror scene. • The "Man Who Can't Breathe" was designed to represent the physical manifestation of cancer and illness, which explains his hospital gown and the constant, rattling oxygen mask sound. THE VIBE Like a hospital room at midnight. It smells of antiseptic, damp wool, and the metallic tang of a cold wheelchair frame.
